How long should deep sleep be

Post by lathnos46 » Sun Oct 21, 2018 8:39 am

Hello everyone. I have a Fitbit wearable on my wrist and it tracks sleep too. I know SleepyHead is the gold standard for how we sleep but I notice from my Fitbit reports I only get a little over an hour each night of "deep sleep". I spend most of the night in "light sleep" and about an hour in "REM". My AHI's are low and yet I am not ever well rested upon waking. I always think I need a bit more sleep. Any opinions? Thanks!

Take what the FitBit says with a grain of salt.
I had one...and it often told me I was asleep when I know I was awake and verified by turning the machine off to go let the dog out to pee. They are good but not perfect.

But to get a general idea of how much sleep in the various stages
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep
and bear in mind that "norms" will also vary with age.

I have tracked my sleep for more than a year with a Pebble smartwatch, and at age 60, it seems like deep sleep varies from a low of 1.5 hours to a high of 3.5 or 4.0 hours. It is somewhat related to total sleep, more sleep, more deep sleep. Things that affect it are caffeine later in the day, chocolate, or red wine in the evening, all lower deep sleep. Of course, the Pebble, like all fitness trackers, just looks at how much you are moving around, so may or may not be accurate. My SO, who doesn't have sleep apnea, but is a lousy sleeper, tends towards 1-2 hours of deep sleep.
