Question about using Mack's Ear Plugs

Post by looking4zzzz » Sun Nov 02, 2008 12:56 pm

Can Mack's ear plugs be re-used? I got a new Quattro FFM and the leaks are giving me fits! I'm going to tape the elbow joint with teflon tape, but I was getting leaks popping up everywhere through the night. I'd fix one and a different one would pop up. So I bought some Mack's (kind of expensive-almost $6 for 6 pairs so I'm hoping I get more than 1 night from them) and I'll try using them to seal some of the leaks. Do I just roll it up and shove it where it is leaking? What will stop if from falling into the mask and rolling around inside? Sorry to ask such dumb questions, but I really have a hard time picturing how this is going to go. Thanks!

The ear plugs can be reused, the cleaner you keep them the longer they work. On the Quattro the suggestion is to roll an earplug into a thin rope, then place the rope along the outside of the cushion. Some people have also had success with putting an earplug on the sharp part of the frame where it presses on the nose bridge area. Thanks for that link. I've searched on tons of links in the forum about the Quattro and leaking, and seen pictures of the putty at the top of the nose part, but didn't see the pictures of the "snake" part before. I'll try that tonight. You talked about keeping the putty clean. Do you actually wash it? If not, how/where do you store it each day while you wash your mask ?

Thanks!

When I was using it, I had a couple that lost their goody after a few nights because the putty was so sticky that dust, fine lint particles, etc. would cling to it. I didn't do anything fancy to solve it, just decided to wad it back up each morning and put it in the plastic case that it came in, then roll it out again each night. Maybe I'm just lazy, but it was a bit of a hassle.

I roll the pIug into a snake. I think I use more than most people..I usually end up using 2 plugs to go around the whole perimeter of the seal. Sometimes I use a small piece and just put it along the bridge of nose area. I find rolling it out to be quite a hassle, myself. *I* am too lazy to keep doing it every nite! I have been able to keep it in good shape over the course of a week by placing a sandwich sized plastic bag over the front of it each day when I remove it and hang it up. I don't want to enclose the whole mask in a bag cause I want the mask to air out, but the bag over the front seems to keep the putty in good shape.

Only if you can clean Mack's ear-wax off of them.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the obvious joke. And sadly, I'm sure someone has already posted the same joke on at least one of the other Mack's threads.
