Of course you conveniently are forgetting all the deregulation that the repugs passed from 1994 to 2006. Spoken like a true republican / christianist. I seem to recall that the GOP was in control of the executive and both houses of congress in 2004 ... but I had untreated apnea that year so maybe I'm wrong.

Basically, if it is a Democrat OR Republican ... chances are good that they are owned by the out-of-control corporate machine and responsible for the current economic mess ... no more one party system pretending to be a two party system -- vote them all out ... vote third party!!!

Today however, I do applaud the 2/3 of the GOP house for standing up to the fear tactics of the Bush 8-year disaster ... and I also applaud the 4 out of 10 Democrats who did the same this afternoon.

Now back to writing one more message to congress for tonight.

I'm a Republican who doesn't vote for every Republican that runs and an evangelical Christian who thinks that those in the Moral Majority and others who think the American Government should be "returned" to fundamentalist Christianity (which is NOT the same as evangelical Christianity, in my book) are wrong. I used "returned" in quotes because I don't believe our government was intended to be or was based on fundamentalist Christianity. I even believe that Democrats can be Christians!!!! I even know some. I realize that a red flag was intentionally waved in front of you and others (Rooster!! ), but I think that what SHOULD be a basic facet of our government and each of us is letting everyone have his/her say without namecalling and without any group of people being lumped together.

I said it before, and I'll probably say it again: I think that using "the" in connection with any group of people ["the Republicans," "the Democrats," "the poor," "the (fill in ethnic name)"] puts us in dangerous and unrealistic waters. I have yet to see a single anything that applies to an entire group of people. For instance, "the capaptalk members are a bunch of bigots" certainly isn't true, and I hate seeing it even be a little true. If the current discussion could continue without name-calling, we'd all be better off. Just my opinion.

Well, in defense of my poor slobbering Okie friend JeffH, he was using "christianist" (note small C) as a derogative, as opposed to "Christian" (large C), a designator for a particular religious persuasion.

Marsha, you make a good point. However, I think Jeff's point is similar to my feelings - we feel a bit pounded into the ground by certain vocal christianist (small C) groups who want to tell us how to live, take over our media and politics, and generally make our lives miserable. In Oklahoma, it's an even more virulent sport, hence my living in the Seattle area.

I don't think Jeff was meaning to bash anyone's religion. He was expressing a reaction to a type of person who uses their religion as a billy club to subdue the "thems" that they perceive as outside their own rarified sphere, rather than as a path to enlightenment. Read "The Sneetches" by Dr. Seuss for my full feelings on the matter.

To quote one of my favorite Texans, Stevie Ray Vaughn - "I love you both".

Yes, I did realize that, Babs. Even though the term was used before, I think (and easily could be wrong on this) that Andrew Sullivan's explanation/definition is used as the primary meaning. I just cap it because it's a proper name, and I'm an obsessive proofreader who can't let proper names go uncapped. (horrors!! )

I understand. MY point is that I do, too. And like I said, maybe JeffH didn't intend to lump all Republicans and Christianists together, but that's how it seemed to me, and saying that all Republicans are Christianists OR that all evangelicals are Christianists is what I was objecting to.

Well, now that you mention it there's that annoying little kid from the family of ten next door. He interferes darn near every time I try to cut the lawn in a hurry.

So I'll vouch for Rooster's statistic, wherever the heck it came from---presumably from the moderate parents next door. But far be it from me to go over there and interfere with their hobby in statistics despite shoddy demographic sampling...
