More Newbie Questions

Post by Robinjh7 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 9:23 pm

Hello. I have mild obstuctive sleep apnea (AHI 14.2). I just got my my cpap/apap-whatever it is-pap today. It's an S8 Autoset II with a ResMed Mirage Swift II Nasal Pillow mask. (I hope that's all correct! ) I'm dreading/excited about going to sleep tonight. I told my husband, "Resistance is futile." I think I look like a Borg! (Any Trekkies out there?) The first night should be interesting. I hope it works! I'm sick of being tired!!!!!

I have a question about my sleep study results. I know I should have asked the doc, but I forgot. What is the difference between apnea and hyponea? In 295.5 minutes, I had 70 apnea/hyponea events. 0 cental apneas. The longest hyponea episode was 32.4 seconds. What does that mean?????

There was so much to take in that I missed getting some information that I wanted. I appreciate any help you all can give me.

Welcome to the forum!!

Get ahold of the sleep lab and get a copy of your entire sleep study report, be sure to get copies of the graphs also. Read it over carefully then post any and all questions you may have about it. Get a copy of your Rx for the machine and mask. These are things that you may need down the road and you have the right to have copies.

The first night is the hardest, it gets easier from there. It takes time for your body to adjust to this new way of sleeping, don't be discouraged by some bad nights in the beginning. Most of us here believe in taking charge of our cpap treatment and we are more than willing to help others get their treatment working for them.

You have a nice machine and mask. With the nasal mask, be sure you don't mouth breathe or mouth leak. If you do, you could try a chin strap(won't work for most) or you could tape your mouth shut every night(I do and so do many others) or you could use poligrip strips to seal the lips together. If your nose gets sore, use Ayr Gel. It is available at most drug stores.

Just keep posting. Ask any questions you have, tell us what worked for you(ya never know what might help someone else!).

Brenda

Hi Robin, I've only been using cpap for 3 weeks and love it my first night I slept 7.5 hours uninterrupted, and that is how most nights have gone. If your mask doesn't work try the cpapauction.com you can buy masks really cheap and I just bought a second that fits better and is real quiet. I use the Puritian Bennett Sandman and F&L petite nasal mask. Love it, hang in there you'll learn to love it.
P.S. it's better then snoring!!!
