Has anybody done a DIY remote on/off switch for resmed AirSense 10?

Post by feeling_better » Fri Oct 23, 2020 5:36 pm

[An old member, now not active, returning for help]

My Resmed AirSense 10 used to auto start when I put on the mask, and auto stop when I remove it. For some reason it does not auto stop anymore. I only see one setting for both on and off, which is enabled.

I cannot reach my machine from where I sleep, so it would be very nice to have this switch. I am hoping somebody has done a wired push switch in parallel with the built in top button to do this function. Any references? Thank you for your help!

Will it auto off if you just unhook the mask hose from the long hose?

That works for me; but it's easier to just reach over and press the button.
I would assume something has changed--like switching masks.
A perfectly normal thing with some nasal pillows.
It happens 100% of the time for me--two machines, over 5+ years.
Better to have it not switch off when you'd like, than to keep shutting off when you don't.

OP specifically said the on/off button on the machine wasn't easily reached from the bed.

With the P10 my machine wouldn't auto off for me but it does for the Bleep. Same pressures.
OP may have switched masks...showing the Swift FX in the profile but maybe the P10 now.

  Might be like me and I couldn't squeeze a gnat's ass between my night table and my bed and the wall and maybe where the machine is down off the top of the table and in a drawer or something...just out of reach.
I couldn't get my table a quarter of an inch closer if my life depended on it. I put a king size bed in a very small bedroom. If I moved the bed it would be in the doorway.
Or maybe shoulders just don't want to allow reaching anywhere.

Unhooking the mask hose from the long hose should work for auto off to kick in though and once up OP auto off has kicked in then just hook it back up again. If it doesn't work then there's a problem with the machine. It needs to be tested anyway to make sure there isn't a problem with the machine sensors.

An excellent place for a quick-connect fitting.

Isn't Alexa a Russian spy?

At least the Clapper is an American spy -- even if bought and paid for the Chinese Communist Party.

Not sure if the idea of using a clapper-type switch was a joke, but if anything like that IS done, the very useful (IMO) feature of the 30 minute cooldown through the hose is forfeit. Personally I would not want to defeat that.

While a Clapper would turn a XPAP off, it would NOT turn it on. You would need to buy a Clapper finger extension to press the On button. Also on stormy nights thunder might turn off the XPAP.

You might just buy Lee Press On Nails, in the extra long size (2 foot), to push the Buttons. Jim

Turning the device's power on remotely won't help, because that won't start the blower. I don't see a practical, permanent DIY solution.

Perhaps an extension grabber.

How old is the device, time for a new one?

Even a brand new device won't necessarily fix the auto off problem if it is because of pressure and the nasal pillow used.
This is talked about in the ResMed manual it is so common.
Some nasal pillows just offer enough resistance the machine doesn't know the human is no longer attached. Primarily a problem at lower pressures but when I experimented with trying to find the right pressure...I quit at 10 cm because it still wouldn't auto off with the P10 pillow on. Now maybe it might have worked if I had used a larger nasal pillow but I didn't have one to try and I wasn't going to use a larger pillow than I wanted or needed just to get auto off to work.

With the Bleep I no longer have this issue though.. Auto off works just fine with it.

The easiest way to fix this problem (assuming not sensor failing issue) is just unhook the mask hose from the long hose and then hook it back up once auto off has kicked in and the machine is in cool down mode...when someone can't reach the on/off button for whatever reason. If someone can't easily disengage the mask hose from the long hose then one of those quick release adapters could be used.
