Changing APAP to straight CPAP????

Post by grumpygirl » Thu Jul 31, 2008 6:59 am

Hello to ALL- Last night I thought I would see how I did with my aerophagia if I changed my APAP to straight CPAP and used the lower pressures I had been using on my APAP machine. With the APAP I had a pressure range of 8.0 to 12.0. So I set my APAP using the clinical menu to CPAP mode. I set the pressure to ramp for 15 min. at 8.0 to 11.6. The menu read "Begin CPAP" so I set it to 8.0 and then the menu read "CPAP" so I set that pressure at 11.6 since I had not registered any higher than 11.0 on my APAP since starting to use it over a month ago. Anyway, this a.m. when I checked my overnight data the pressure results came up:NO DATA, everything else came up with a figure such as leak rate, AI, AHI, and HI. Why did I not get any pressure results? Did I set something incorrectly? I would really like to know what the pressure reading was for the night. BTW, my AI , AHI, HI results were much better with the CPAP mode setting. I expected that but I waiting to see how my aerophagia and GERD do with these lower settings. Any suggestions????

I'm not sure. I have the same machine, and I set it to CPAP mode almost a month ago, but I do get all of my readings every day.

I'll have to go to my clinical menu to see if there is something I see, but it sounds like you set everything correctly from what I remember.

Does APAP/CPAP affect GERD?

It most certainly has affected my GERD. I guess the constant pressure of CPAP makes the acid reflux worse. The APAP machine helped alot because the pressure is not high all the time. It stays fairly low until needed. However APAP seems to wake me up more during the night when the pressure changes suddenly. Therefore I don't feel as rested and am trying to see if lower pressure on CPAP may help-hopefully without causing the GERD to flare up more.

What my husband did to raise the head of our bed was to cut some small 2"x4" scraps we had into 3" long blocks and nailed 2 of those blocks together (whilst we were told to raise the head of the bed 6" we found that too high and we ended up scrunched down to the foot of the bed every morning. 4" high worked better for us than 6").

We put one 4"x4"x3" block on each side of the bed at the head of the bed on the side rail that the mattress/spring sits on. Then a little further down towards the foot of the bed, maye a 3rd of the way down, he put a 2"x4"x3" block on each side rail to better support the mattress/spring.

Is it possible you removed your data card too soon after getting up and lost the data?

I've heard that you need to allow 20 mins. for number crunching.

If you're asking with regard to your own machine....the one in your profile (the Legacy model/"Tank")......."no", you can remove it as soon as you turn your machine off.

Den,
The only time I ever pulled the card within 5 minutes of rising, I got a subscript out of range error in pro. That's the reason I suggested the possibility to grumpygirl.

When running in straight CPAP mode I'm not sure the pressure reading shows up. Mine has been setup in CPAP mode since I got it, and I have never had pressure data on the results menu.

On the Smart Data screen it will report the pressure I have it set at, but I do not believe it ever varies.

That's what I'm thinking, that the pressure in CPAP mode is known because you set it. In APAP mode it is a machine/software generated result. No need to tell you the pressure you already know.

I was thinking the first time around of data from the card read into software versus from the display.

When you changed it to cpap, did you press "change" and then choose the "cpap"? I think you can think you've changed something, but haven't really. Go back and take a look at it.
