Sleep Apnea linked to...

Post by AJinDuncan » Tue Oct 13, 2009 1:52 pm

I was wondering if anybody had any research that linked sleep apnea and GERD.

Also, I'm wondering the same thing in regards to seizures.

Interesting to note I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia as a teenager, reflux as a young adult, and OSA in my 50's.

i have had gerd for years, and have been on medication that only partially helped for probably 20 years, i have other health problems and have been sleeping in an electric recliner chair for the past few years, so almost sitting up and even so i would wake in the night almost choking because the reflux was so bad, i actually had a bout of aspiration pneumonia last year but it was blamed on my MS. I was also dx as having complex sleep apnea and that too was put down to the MS so i never thought of the Gerd and the pneumonia and MS in the same thought. Once i got my machine and got my settings right i gradually noted that the gerd was very definately better, i no longer wake up in the night choking or nearly aspirating so i can see a link between the 2. I tend to think its a link in the therapy though- my machine pressures are fairly high and i think that positive pressure acts as a physical barrier to the stomach contents- i have not asked my sleep doctor about that but i did tell him that an improvement in the reflux was an unexpected bonus and he said that it was actually a frequent comment

Morning to you.

Since you are interested in Gerd and Sleep Apnea, put both names in Search at the top of the page. You will find discussions that go back for years.

Before I was diagnosed with OSA, sometimes I would wake up with this burning (maybe dusty)type of sensation in my throat(maybe a little sick also could have happened) and no amount of coughing or drinking water would get rid of it except time. After being on CPAP(August 10,2009), I no longer have what would appear to be early symptoms of GERD.

There's a well known correlation between GERD and OSA. The lungs try to suck in air. The throat is blocked. So, stomach acid is sucked up into the esophagus.

Unfortunately I know that first hand , am getting my third ablation of my esophagus in two weeks .It was my ent who told me to look into sleep apnea and told me point blank you got it .I liked the directness of it really it wasn't a question at all.
