Expanding waistline after CPAP use

Post by grumpygirl » Tue Jun 24, 2008 6:00 pm

I know I have read some posts on this subject, but I cannot seem to locate them on a search. My tummy and waistline has "expanded" so much since starting CPAP therapy in Nov. 07, it makes me a bit sad since even at 55 I've never had this problem to this extent. I have awful aerophagia and GERD which I am hoping my new APAP will address. It seems to have helped some but my belly still looks like a mini balloon. Anybody got any solutions for this "delicate" problem? Any good exercises or diet solutions. I am not overweight but wonder if my recent sugar addiction may be a bit of a contributor to my bloating. I'm trying to cut down!!! Thanks for any suggestions!!

I would hope this would explain my problem too, but what excuse will I use for the fourty pounds I've gained. Maybe all that girth, had to fill up with something. Jim

Of course, if I had died in my sleep from Apnea, I would weigh less, but it wouldn't matter after the holes covered over.

I eat less than half of what I did, but can no longer exercise to burn the fuel due to low heart output. So we just make the best of what we can, and go on with life.

In the two years I have been on CPAP I have gained nearly forty pounds!
My eating habits have not changed, nor has my exercise (or lack of it) changed. All the air from the mask must be shooting down behind the trachea and into my stomach. That's got to be it!
If someone sticks me with a pin I will like a giant balloon with a large leak! At least then I would get back to normal!

Jeff

lets just say I feel your pain. I have gained about 10 pounds, and it all seems to be in my abdomen! Lovely!

Ditto that, tnmom! Geesh, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Unfortunately, I'm afraid mine is NOT air!

What's up with that? I was planning on LOOSING weight!

I guess it could be that knockin' on the door of the big "50". I can hardly bring myself to say that number!

GrumpyGirl, I believe you're onto something with the whole sugar addiction thing. Not only that, carbs in general. I am pretty much convinced that's my problem.

Bummer, I don't know if I feel better or worse to have company. I was expecting to lose weight after reading the initial reports of more energy etc.

I haven't really changed my diet or exercise habits, but have definitely put on some pounds and inches. I try to get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 or 4 times a week, and don't "overdo" the food.

I know the formula of calories in vs. calories burned, but in the past I used to be able to get results if I worked on it. Now, it just doesn't seem to matter. I stay the same weight and girth no matter what.

Maybe my original physical exam at the sleep lab will never change. They wrote "patient is above his optimal weight". Nice euphemism!!
