Newbie chat night - any interest? Done before?

Post by silver123 » Sun Jun 22, 2008 9:24 am

It seems like there a lot of us new to CPAP. Is there any interest in having a chat session one night particularly for newbies?

There is a lot of room for getting questions answered on the forum and lots of resources listed. I was thinking more in terms of encouragement and of course, questions will come up. This can be a pretty isolating process.

If there are a few old timers that might consider jumping in that could really help.

How about Monday nights at 9:30 EST as a starting time?

I think it's a great idea, Silver! I don't know that it's been done before, at least in the three months I've been here, but it's definitely something that would most likely benefits newbies, and I'm glad you thought of it.

I have never tried Chat before, so I went in just now to check it out, and it looks like it's pretty simple, although I was in the room all by myself. I don't know if I will remember on Mondays with the state my brain has been in lately, but I will try, and I hope others will, too.

Again, excellent idea and definitely in the helping spirit of this forum!

I'm not a real newbie, but certainly not a pro nor in league w/a lot of our more experienced members here - but - I have had experience w/live "heatlh" chats.

My problem w/"scheduled" chats is that I forget about them until it is too late. Even when I remember them "too early" and have to find something else to do for a while.

On the other hand, I like that we can just look near the top of the page, see if someone is in chat and if I'm feeling inclined, drop in on chat.

The problem w/that tho, especially for newbies, is that usually the newbie is too timid to just jump in and ask their question or make their comment.

And we more experienced souls sometimes say hi and then go right on chatting instead of recognizing that it is a newbie and encouraging them to answer questions, ask questions, etc.

I know that I am not always in chat often enough to recognize a newbie and have found to my chagrin that I asked someone who's been around this forum a lot longer than I have if they were new. Duh!

So, if you newbies want a scheduled chat. Go for it! Once a week or whatever, post the reminder and invitation in the forum.

BUT feel free and welcome to drop in to chat anytime you seen any one in there chatting and DON'T BE BASHFUL! Say hi and ask your questions! Give us some time to finish typing our current comment and formulate an answer for you. And don't be bashful about asking a second time if you don't get an answer. Sometimes so many different conversations are going on all at once we miss a question or comment.

Oh! And don't fret about any typos. We all read typos pretty darn good!!! And if you don't, hang around chat for awhile, you'll pick up that "skill" real fast and will be reading typos as well as the best of us!!

Sounds good to me. I've been in the chat-room quite a few times, and the people are very friendly and helpfull. You might not get a full 3 paragraph long answer, but you get the general idea. They can also give you a thread to visit yourself for further questions and answers.
I would enjoy meeting newbies, like myself, and you can count me in for this Monday night.

Good Idea....won't know until you have tried and then perhaps over a few attempts, on how well it may go over.

I agree with the comment about some newbies and even perhaps some of our more experienced folks. But then again, no one is forced to participate.

I tried to set a time that would work in a couple of time zones though it's probably not the greatest for our euro, asian and aussie folk. WE can see if something else might work better.

So let's try for tomorrow to start and we can just see how it goes.

Newbie hosehead chat at 9:30 EST. Just click on the chatting live link to the left of the yellow lightbulb up above.

I didn't know there was a chat room, but I'll try and stop in tonight. Sounds like a good idea.

I would reiterate what Slinky said in that if you have a question or comment, jump into the chat at any time.
You can see who's in the room at the top of the page -- if nobody is there -- you can be the first one in and be ready to "pounce" on the unsuspecting

I'll try to keep an eye out, but that's generally dinner time for me here on the left coast.....no worries, there are plenty of other folks here....

By the way, I've been here a year and still consider myself a newbie!!!!!!!

Good luck -- see ya in the chat.
cheers
goose

chat for newbie's sounds like a great idea

normally there are often so many conversations going on it can be hard to have your questions answered....many of us have been around long enough to have most of our cpap questions answered, so we talk about pretty much anything and everything, but everyone is more than happy to help when asked; then again, there's always more to learn, even for folks who have been around a while

just a thought: if you guys log in for your newbie chat and find it full of oldies with too much going on to allow for meaningful dialogue, it IS possible to open a second chat
