Resmed Liberty elbow broken *again*

Post by jmaziarz » Mon Apr 28, 2008 7:54 am

I have only had my Liberty mask for a few weeks and last night the plastic elbow broke *again*. The way this mask works, the elbow can be removed from the front of the mask by gently squeezing the elbow joint and flexing the very thin plastic on the top and bottom of the elbow. This is the second time in the night that the thin plastic has broken on the bottom of the elbow causing the hose to pop off.

Has anyone had this experience and figured out a fix to prevent the breakage?

Thanks,
~Jer

Update: I spoke with my Home Care Provider and they were very little help regarding a solution or fix from preventing the breakage again. They were nice enough to send me a replacement via UPS.

I also called ResMed and spoke with a customer service rep. about the issue. He said that the elbow has been redesigned and he would send me two replacements via 3-day FedEx. To identify a new elbow from an old one, count the finger ridges on the sides of the elbow.

3 ridges = old design
4 ridges = new design

Apparently the head gear has been redesigned so it does not become unclipped as easy. ResMed is sending me that too.

I had the same problem with my liberty mask. I disconnected the elbow so I could clean my mask and when I snapped it back on the bottom of the elbow cracked. I got a replacement but I am just leaving it connected since the plastic is so delicate. I also have had one of the hooks at the top of the mask crack twice.

I came up with a solution. I had the dme exchange it for a Hybrid mask. I broke 3 liberties in 2 months. I haven't broken any hybrids in 4 months. I really liked the liberty but just couldn't chance that they would stop replacing it.

Oh man, hope mine doesn't break. I'm brand new on CPAP (2 nights) just got a liberty to replace a quattro. The 2 nights with the quattro were 2 of the worst of my life. uncomfortable, leaks, the whole 9 yards. Discouraged doesn't begin to describe what I was feeling. anyway, went to the dme today and they gave me a liberty. I took a nap with it and it seemed to work very well. I'm hoping tonight will be the 1st night of the rest of my life!

I really cant see how its possible NOT to break this delicate little mask. I use one as my second mask and so far have broken to elbows and only last week snapped off the bit that the head gear clips onto and that's not replaceable as its part of the main mask and out of warranty. I have 2 liberty's and bought one at half price during a promotion as I knew I would have to brutalize it for spares

Hi TDog,

Welcome to the boards

So far I have used the Liberty for about a month with no breakages.

I am gentle with it though.

good luck with the therapy.

Keep us posted!

Thanks for the welcome!

Took me until 4:00am to get to sleep last night. Once I finally did, I got maybe 4 decent hours in. I actually feel ok all things considered. I'm still pretty confident the liberty is going to work for me with some tweaks.

BTW, does anyone know the correct mask setting on the S8 Elite for a liberty? It is not listed in the book. And for that matter, does anyone know what difference (if any) the mask setting makes? I can't imagine it alters your pressures or anything.
