stupid question about distilled water

Post by KBee » Fri Apr 25, 2008 6:20 pm

It suddenly dawned on me maybe I should be putting the distilled water bottle in the fridge after it is opened??

There would be no reason to refrigerate distilled water, there is nothing in it to spoil, you would only delay the warming of the water if you are using a heated humidifier.

Nope - not necessary. I have kept my distilled water container on a counter in the bathroom these last 4 years without a problem - even if I was away for a week or so.

You may feel better if you place it in the refrigerator, but unless your container of distilled water is subject to wayward pollen, or other (organic) particulates you are quite safe.

Ditto, just make sure to re-cap bottle after using it.

This was a good question, in my view, one I'd never thought of! So, I did a little "Goggle" search and found this article that actually recommends storing distilled water in a glass bottle rather than in the plastic jugs it comes in. What do you think?

May I ask what the logic behind putting distilled water bottle in the refrigerator is? Just wondering? Why take up the space even & not to mention having to heat it up before use!!

Altho this may be a good summer cooling off trick eh?

Agreed with all. I have left mine un-refrigerated. It does get used relatively quickly and as long as you don't take a swig from it, should be no problem!!!

That plastic bottle will last twenty years in a land fill, it can probably take a month setting under my bed table.

Thought: What's the water put into in the HH? Jim

Thanks, everyone. I'll just leave it in the plastic jug in the bathroom then. It was just one of those things you think about in the middle of the night when you can't sleep.

It's not necessary. I started using my new CPAP 2 weeks ago and I asked that same question after my DME told me I'd need to do so. I decided to ask some people in the know and was told to leave my bottles out on the counter at room temperature but I wouldn't advise drinking it unless you've just gone through a major hurricane and you're municipal water is out, your private deep well water is out unless it's on generator power, or you didn't make it to Sam's in time to stock up on Ozarka and FEMA hadn't arrive with the bagged ice yet then and only then would I consider drinking the water meant for the CPAP which you wouldn't be using anyway since your power was out unless you had a battery back up and besides it'd be too hot to sleep at night anyway with no power. I've been there, done that, didn't like it either.

Yep, you're right! Leaving mine in the plastic bottle, too!

ROFL...spot on!

You wouldn't want to store that water in a plastic jug. You want to keep it pure before it goes into your plastic humidifier.

Since we're asking stupid questions about distilled water, I have one!

How often should I change the water in the humidifier? Should it be changed every night before I go to bed or is it safe to use the water until it runs low?

I dump out the water each morning and refill before using at night, I personally just don't like the idea of using water that has room air blown over it all night, even though the air goes thru a filter.

If you're using heated humidification, it may use up most of it during the night. You can either add water to the full line or if there's very little left, you COULD dump it, although it shouldn't make any difference if it's distilled water since there's nothing in it anyway.
I use "pass-over" (no heat) humidification and the water level drops about 1/4 of an inch per night. About every 3 - 4 nights I just add more. Every few months, I'll dump the remainder, rinse out the chamber and re-fill. I've been using this method for 3 years and my water chamber still looks like new. Even as cheap as distilled water is, I hate to waste any more than I have to.
