Increased Heart Rate

Post by halveyp » Mon Apr 21, 2008 10:36 am

Hi there. I just started using CPAP a week ago (respironics m-series with c-flex, humidifier and comfortgel mask) and it's going very well. I'm already feeling that I have much more energy. However I've noticed that my heart rate is pretty high most of the time even while resting. Just sitting here at my computer it's up around 90 bpm. Anyone else experience this? Is it just my body readjusting to having normal sleep again. Thanks.

Hello & Welcome, halveyp! Glad you found this forum--SO much useful info and SO many helpful people here!

I haven't heard of anyone reporting increased heart rate in tandem with beginning CPAP.

Heart rate

Post by Captain_Midnight » Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:10 pm

Halveyp asks...Anyone else experience this? [heart rate of 90] Is it just my body readjusting to having normal sleep again.

I don't recall my initial heart rate change as I began CPAP (I came down w the flu the day I got my machine, so I never thought to check it.)

In the subsequent months, my heart rate went down, and this is at least partially due to my increase in exercise, including distance running (it's 52 as I write this).

I also recall other posters saying that their heart rate and b.p. gradually declined with compliant PAP therapy.

As with all things cardio, check with the doc if symptoms persist, or if you are worried.

Good luck w PAP therapy.

Increased Heart Rate

Post by pmnorth » Mon Apr 28, 2008 3:50 pm

I am just starting to use a CPAP machine as wel and have noticed that when I wake up in the middle of the night my heart rate seems to be elevated. This is subjective but I think it might be related to the feeling I get when extreme dry mouth causes a kind of panic. But overall I haven't experienced any appreciable difference in blood pressure or hear rate.

pmnorth:

If you're using a nasal mask, the dry mouth is a really good clue that your mouth is popping open under pressure and all your treatment air is whistling out, instead of getting to your lungs. If you have data on leakage available, look at it and do what you need to to get that under control. There are lots of threads on the subject, and some organized material under the yellow lightbulb at the top of the page.

One possibility (and this might be good news) is that the heart rate can "surge" during REM sleep. It's possible that with PAP therapy, you are finally getting the REM sleep that you could have been missing, and when you wake up at the end of an REM phase, your beats-per-minute are still elevated.

Just a thought.

Increased Heart Rate

Post by pmnorth » Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:02 am

I like the idea that it could be more REM sleep. I particularly like the idea of more 'adventurous' REM. Unfortunately, I don't remember any adventures but I'll keep trying. Meanwhile I just checked my heart rate & blood pressure and they are all within my normal limits. I have been awake for about one hour and have been relatively reposed (sitting at computer, reading this forum, nothing exciting for the last 15 minutes).

I only had one of those panic moments last night so things are improving. I have to use a full face mask since my nose gets congested fairly frequently, particularly in dry air. Here in the north that is quite frequent. The humidifier on the Resmed S8 Elite is just not up to the job of providing adequate humidity to keep my nasal passages open all the time. The dry mouth thing seems to occur even when I am breathing through my nose too. I don’t understand exactly how that is happening.

Ah. I started with an UltraMirage Full Face, and the air comes shooting into the mask right at the mouth. Since the vents are always open, there's a certain amount of flow, more than you're breathing. I found that to give me dry mouth, too. My Respironics RemStar Auto with the HH couldn't keep up either.

I was about to try to design some kind of add-on to diffuse the incoming air, but converted to a nasal prong device instead.

I know it's been years since you posted this, but I just thought I'd chime in as I've had something similar (after 3 months) 1st couple months my resting heart rate was still normal, 70 or lower, now all throughout the day it's 85-100. I don't feel particularly unhealthy though (actually I'm really energized)... and it is lower when I wake up. Part of me thinks it may just be my heart has healed and is a little confused with all it's newfound energy. I've also noticed it spiking easier with any adrenaline surges. I had adrenal fatigue during my untreated apnea days, so I suppose it could be that too (that my adrenal gland is now reaching normal abilities, but is overreacting because it has been compensating for so long). I have an appt tomorrow with the pulmonary specialist, so I'll be asking him

========================

you need to see a cardiologist to know what your situation actually is

did you measure your O2 at the same time
if it goes low then heart rate goes up

i found mine down to 94 while sitting watching tv
but my heart rate was not that high when i checked

using a computer could easily elevate it

but yes my heart rate goes up and down with movement, coffee, stress, etc

my normal resting rate is high 60s while really resting
low 70s when upright and resting

and why not just respond to the last question?
or even better: answer both in one single post? (I know - that is a no-no for a troll who likes his postcounter)

I am starting to believe that libtard is a badge of honor awarded by xxyzx. Seems to have no basis in political leaning since there is no way someone can judge that from posts in this thread. So Here a cheer out to all labeled libtards in the forum!

Thanks for the compliments!

It's not really a political leaning, it's more of a a cheer out to the Sheeple, a mind is a terrible thing to waste!
