My first night with Melatonin

Post by dieselgal » Fri Apr 11, 2008 2:00 pm

Well I finally broke down and bought some melatonin 1mg. Last night I took one and I have questions! Does melatonin act as a diuretic? I was up last night 5 times to use the bathroom. This was really odd for me and I had not taken anything else to cause it. I also felt like an old woman this morning for sure....of course this was probably because I was up all night! LOL

Dieselgal, I've been taking melatonin 5mg every night for 3-4 months, haven't had that side effect, and I haven't found that anywhere in the literature on it.

Must be something else. It sure doesn't affect me that way, and I take 1mg also. Like everything else, give it a week before you make a decision about it.

I take 3mg everynight at dinner time. I use to take it at bedtime, but read on here to take it earlier. It really relaxes me alot more taking it earlier.

I wonder if you had more events after taking the melatonin? Do you have any way to tell? Software? That would explain the increase in BR trips.

Melatonin has never affected me that way -- apnea did though.......

Melatonin is a naturally produced hormone that decreases with age. Kids make a ton of it which is why they sleep so well most of the time.
Darkness enhances the workings and the body produces it's melatonin when it gets dark, so I take my dose just before I turn out the light and mask up.

The only time I take it anymore is when I'm assured of a dark room for at least the first hour of sleep (Wife reads at night with an itty-bitty book light and according to the information I've read, that's enough to diminish the affect of supplemental melatonin.....).

take care
cheers

Well that is good news.

What I was thinking is if your muscles relaxed more causing more events which lowered your O2 level causing your heart to secrete that enzyme which acts like a diuretic - causing more bathroom breaks (brb's). Not so?

Then did you have more to drink before bed?

What is you AHI?
Maybe try reducing the amount you take!! From the readings I've done, you really do NOT need much.

Don't forget your body produces some melatonin already, so you just want to supplement not replace what is already being made.

Somewhere around 300mcg (1/3 milligram) has been shown to be the most effective dosage.

Hey now the extras bathroom trips with the melatonin is a strange thing.Could you possibly have had more cafeine before bedtime than usual? From what I have heard in the past, caffeine can get you several hours after you have some and make you go to the bathroom all night long.the same thing will happen if you had any alcohol whatsoever. For some reason one 12 oz beer will make you have to get rid of enough liquid to fill a lake! LOL.

Melatonin is an EXTREME diuretic if taken in any quantity. I take a 5MG time release before bed, a 10 at first "pee" and then another 10-15 time release until about 2 hours before getting up and pee about 7-8 times during period. I have PBH but I figure melatonin makes it MUCH worse, but I need the msg, so I suck it up....BR Eureka, CA 2017

Melatonin has been found to decrease anti-diuretic hormone. So for some people it could act as a diuretic. It did for me.

Wow! You are taking a large amount of melatonin.

I understand you have PBH, but do you use the CPAP machine display or CPAP software to monitor the effectiveness of your CPAP therapy?
