URGENT: buy my own mask BEFORE 1st cpap trial?

Post by Ligament » Mon May 23, 2005 4:50 pm

Hello All,

Great forum here. Thanks for all the advice.

I have OSA. About 60 apneas/hour. Getting my first CPAP trial Wednesday night.

Question: Should I buy my own CPAP mask BEFORE my trial, so I can use the mask during the trial? The Aura or ComfortCurve are looking tempting to me, and I highly doubt the sleep center will have the latest masks to use.

My logic is that I will try the Aura or ComfortCurve out anyway, so I might as well be titrated using such a mask.

I will need to order from cpap.com tonight to get it by Wednesday.

Thanks!

Your first mask should be the Resmed Activa. IMHO. It has the best chance of success. Its also very comfortable , Just don't make the straps tight or it wont work. They should hang loosely. It comes with a CD to instruct you to get the best results. The Aura and comfort curve might be best left till you get some 'face time' with your new AUTO PAP.

Best mask

Opinions are like other things, everyone has one.

I have a personal bias to the Breeze and cannot imagine anyone ever using anything else.
If others are happy with their mask, that is all that matters.
Most complaints I have seen about the Breeze, IMHO, result from a persons inability to properly adjust it. It is indeed an art to get it right.
Just my opinion.

Absolutely... I have a few too...

And I have a personal bias against the Breeze... After testing one for a week I don't see how anyone can ever make that plastic contraption work. I did learn to like the nasal pillow interface though.

Right On!! We are all different and a mask that works for someone may not work for you.

I personally would not invest in anything until you have gone through your trial and get a better feel for things. You will learn something from every interface you try so it's not a bad thing if in your trial you use a mask that may not be the one you ultimately prefer.

I bought my own mask - to trial - but not for the CPAP titration. I knew that using a mask would be tough for me - so I bought the mask - an Activa - and de-sensitized myself the week prior - wore it for a little while each day. Although, they didn't let me use the mask for the titration - it definitely helped me to get used to the mask.

IMHO - the Activa is the best mask - for me anyway! Iused the Activa from the get-go. I am relatively new to cpap - only 3 months on - and I have tried several interfaces - the Breeze, Aura, Swift, Comfort Curve, and the Activa - oh, and the Ultra Mirage FF for congestion. After spending lots of moohla, thinking that there may be something better out there for me that the Activa - I have been totally wrong - the Activa is my good old faithful!
So, if something works for you, don't be mistaken - there may not be anything out there better! I shouldn't have tried to fix what wasn't broken!

PS - Anyone out there interested in a gently used Breeze (<2 nights), let me know!

This is perhaps the problem. You gave it only one week. You did not give it a chance.
Gotta have a positive attitude too.

Actually I did give it a chance, a week is plenty of time. I did like it more than the standard nasal mask with forehead bumper they first loaned to me. I learned I liked the nasal pillow interface, and I learned my head shape was not compatible with the plastic frame on the breeze. I know it works well for others and I'm happy for those of you who like it. For me, soft headgear like what comes with the swift and Aura works much better.

A week ! No way. Maybe a week to adjust to CPAP therapy . For mask comfort A few minutes and its go/nogo for me. Some folks are just slow learners

Back to the original question. No don't purchase a mask yet. Try on all the masks that you can at the sleep center. Use their $ for a quick trial. Eliminate the bad really fast. Then, Buy the Activa online and save a bunch.

Yahoooo some of us agree!! This is what I tried to say in my first post, try as many as you can before buying!! Also I was trying to say that just because someone tells you they like a mask, doesn't mean it will work for you. For every person you find that likes a certain mask, you will find many others who don't. Be picky, try as many as you can, a mask you can live with is crucial to your success!!! Good luck!!!
