RemStar Pro vs RemStar Pro 2

Post by BigGayBert » Sun Jan 20, 2008 1:05 am

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Respironics RemStar Pro and the RemStar Pro 2? And do you know how to tell the difference between the two?

Well, the Remstar Pro 2 is the upgraded model, to add the ability to collect all that data that is so important to track what's going on. The Pro is compliance data only. How to tell the difference, I can't tell you; I had the original Pro as my first machine, jumping past the Pro 2 to my current machine.

Unless one of the machines is an M series, the pro doesn't collect useful data and the Pro 2 does. Tell them apart by looking at the red characters after the words Remstar on the top of the machine. Or I imagine by the model number too.

Bert, when you say REMstar Pro, it depends on whether you're talking about the older "pre-M" machines or an M series machine.

There's the very old pre-M REMstar Pro that Amontilado described well -- records only hours of use...can't record details like AHI and leak info.

Respironics discontinued the old Pro and began making the old pre-M REMstar Pro 2. The old Pro 2 records full details -- AHI and leak data. The old Pro (with no 2 in its name) does not.

Then, Respironics stopped manufacturing any of the old pre-M CPAP (and autopap) machines, in favor of turning out the newer, smaller M series machines.

The M series Pro CPAP is named just that -- REMstar Pro. There's no "2" in the name, like there was in the older pre-M REMstar Pro 2. The M series REMstar Pro cpap records full data.

The M series cpap and autopap machines have the words "M series" on top of the machine, after the name of the model (Plus, Pro, Auto, Auto|A-Flex.)

The older pre-M machines are often referred to affectionately on the message board as the "tank" or "classic." "Tank" refers to their size as well as their tried and true reliability. Actually, the old "tank" machines are not that much larger or heavier than the smaller M series machines.

In a nutshell, if you want a Respironics CPAP machine that can record full details (not just hours of use) onto its Smart Card, you need one of these:

The older pre-M REMstar Pro 2
Should have a blue sticker on top that says "C-Flex."
Will have 6 grooves cut across top of machine.
Records full data.

or

The newer M series REMstar Pro
There is no "2" in the M series Pro.
There is no "C-Flex" sticker on top -- C-Flex is in all the M series Pro machines.
The phrase "M series" is printed after the model name, on top of machine.
Records full data.

The attached M humidifier is the part with big knob on top. Water chamber is hidden inside:

Personally, if I were going to buy an M series machine, I'd get just the machine...without the integrated humidifier. I'd buy a separate heated humidifier like the Fisher & Paykel HC 150 humidifier which can be used with any machine. Holds much more water than the dinky (and sometimes leaky!) M series water chamber holds.

The older pre-M machines have excellent integrated humidifiers and their water chamber holds a lot more than the M's do. Perhaps another good reason to call the older machine "the tank."

The EncoreViewer software works with all the Respironics machines (M and pre-M) that have a Smart Card. However, some of the models do not record full data even if they have a Smart Card in them. ALL the "Plus" machines (even the M series Plus) and the oldest pre-M Pro without a "2" in its name record only hours of use onto the Smart Card. There's no useful AHI and leak data recorded by those machines.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks, everyone!! It looks like I have the old version...the Remstar Pro (tank). I will just have to wait until I get my new machine (probably a bipap auto) to get any meaningful data!

From your post, we have no idea which make or model of machine you may have. Some of the older generations and models didn't have C-Flex (or A-Flex). If you look at the bottom of the machine to see what specific model you have......also what's printed on the top......would be helpful to us. Most different generations had different methods of getting into the setup mode. It's usually a matter of holding down a couple of buttons while plugging in the machine.

There are also many postings in the forum archives which have the instructions regarding how to get into the clinical setups to change the many machines that have been made. With a little searching, they can be found.
