with the right pillow there is hope

Post by Nightwatcher » Sat Oct 20, 2007 2:04 pm

I doubt that anyone else here has been as negative about their CPAP as I have been. I still hate it.

My family was even asking me to quit cpap because I have been getting much less sleep in the 2 months since starting. I have been a bear to live with.

Last night I got the first 8 hours of sleep I have had in over 2 months. It was because I bought a new 25 dollar pillow at Target. It's called the Down Pocket and has both down & feathers. It shapes to my head and mask so I can sleep on my side again.

My failure to keep the mask on all night was not due to motivation, guts or smarts. It was partly having a bad pillow.

So, don't salute me, it the pillow that made all the difference. It wasn't so much determination, logic or caring about my family. It was a simple $25 pillow made of both down & feathers.

Glad to hear of your success with your new pillow. Sometimes the answers to our problems are right next to our old noggin.
I've been using a water-based pillow long before starting therapy and feel it does an excellent job for me.

The Target "shapeable" pillow has been spoken of at great length on this forum for a couple of years.

Best wishes,

Good deal. Glad you found the missing link for successful therapy. I use a contour memory foam pillow and just put my head on the edge of it so the mask isn't on the pillow. I am a side sleeper all the time. I was using the pillow pre-cpap therapy for support for neck problems. I just lucked out and got it to work with my masks.

Hey guys,

let me APOLOGIZE for tooting my horn like I was the first person ever to discover the target pillow!!

I was just so excited to wake up and realize that I had slept through the entire night. I guess I was sort of on a high

Yes, target is like walmart (except Rosie shops @ Target) I am sure you can find the Down & Feather online, or someone's JC Penny pillow sounded good.

The point is that a change of pillow may be the simplest, cheapest and best thing you can do. But, it has to be shapeable (not memory foam, easy stuff like down & feathers)

Maybe the manufactures should include a pillow with the machine! LOL

Nothing to apologize for. Your successes will encourage other new users to stick with it. Sometimes it's just that "ONE thing" (picture Jack Palance in "City Slickers" with his finger in the air) that can make all the difference.

For those of you allergic to down, like I am, you might want to try a synthetic pillow with "slippery down." I got mine for around $25, too at Target. It made a big difference for me.

I tried the Papillow and it didn't work at all for me. But the slippery down is great. it feels just like real down.

Now that I'm using the Headrest mask with it (for side sleeping), I hardly even know that I'm on cpap.

No need to apologize - only us old timers remember it was mentioned 2 year ago - but your enthusiasm is doing a great service to suffering newbies.

So - toot ahead, any one who thinks they've discovered somenthing helpful.

And it's wonderful to hear someone on a high after a good night's sleep.
