Heated Humidifier

Post by forumadmin » Tue Apr 19, 2005 12:48 pm

A heated humidifier uses a water chamber in conjunction with a heater plate, which warms the water that is delivered through the patient circuit. Heated humidification has known to cut down on mouth breathing, as well as improve compliance.

If your nose hurts or burns, your mouth is very dry you may need more humidity. A non heated humidifier does not work well because as soon as water starts to evaporate it cools off the rest of the water. Cool water has a very hard time evaporating. To cure this problem a heater is required just to keep the water at room temp. Many hose heads turn up the heat until they get rained out, add hose insulation to help prevent rainout, then run it just a little cooler, ...

For the scientific types, If you take say 600cc of water and manage to evaporate about 50cc of it you will reduce the temp of the remaining water by about 50 degrees!! All very round numbers here. But you can see its ice water and won't evaporate easily.

I started using my cpap back in September of 2005. I use a Respironics REMstar/pro2 with the humidifier. I tried to use my cpap without the humidifier but found the air too cold, so I use the humidifier every night. I like to sleep with the heater turned down to around 60 degrees. I found that when it's that cool in the house, I get a lot of condensation built up in my mask. The "rain" is not condusive to a great sleep. I need to keep the temp at 65 degrees or above to clear up the condensation problem.

You need the Aussie Heated Hose to eliminate rainout. Check the search function and you'll find a ton of information on it. Their website is:
