Upper back pains

Post by GReeNeYe » Fri Aug 17, 2007 5:47 pm

ok at first i was using the ramp function on my pro2 and all was ok. lately i tried just using the cpap at recommended pressure by my doc (20cm if im not mistaken). the past few days i have gotten slight upper back and a bit of chest pain. it doesnt hurt bad, just seems like muscle fatigue. last night i went back to using the ramp function and no pain but im still a bit sore from the previous nights that i used the cpap at doc's prescribed pressure. Has anyone else had this problem?

i might add im a smoker too

Quite a number of folks have reported similar experiences.
You might try to gradually shorten your Ramp time and increase your starting pressure. After all, 20 cm. is quite a bit of pressure on CPAP. If you're using C-Flex, you might try the setting of 3 (if you're not already) for the most exhale relief. I use the setting of 2, but I'm at almost half the pressure you're set at.

Best wishes,

Den

ok ty very much, my worry is that my doc sent me for a fine tuning sleep over after i complained about the high pressure and said from the looks of my results that i cannot lower my pressure or i fall back into bad sleep. im not sure what to do here

I'm a little confused.....
In your first post you mentioned CPAP and Pro 2, but (now) your profile says you have the BiPAP Pro 2.

If you have the BiPAP Pro 2, what is your EPAP (exhale) setting? (If your IPAP (inhale) pressure is 20?)

I would think that the BiPAP Auto would be a better choice of machines. Also, I would think that a doctor MIGHT agree to a somewhat lower pressure to start with while you're getting used to this therapy.....after all, SOME pressure is better than what you had before starting therapy (none). Then, as you get used to it, the pressure could be raised.

i may have confused you being that i am new to all this and dont know the technical abbriviations yet. the machine i have is the one listed in my profile. im a bit weary about messing with my settings. are we allowed to change settings???

all i know is its been almost a week now that my chest and back feels very sore, also when i wake there is so much pressure comming out of my machine its leaking from the mask seals. i think ill call my doc if this soreness doesnt leave in the next two days

i realy need some more input from anyone who can help me here, its scaring me a bit

I have been on CPAP and then APAP since March and sometimes wake up with upper back and chest pain. However my apnea was diagnosed following a head injury in a car accident two and a half years ago. I had other injuries as well, so when I had these pains, I thought it was my accident injuries acting up. It never occured to me that it might be due to the machine!

I would really be interested in hearing other people's experiences with this as well.
