Your boyfriend needs to go to a doctor and ask for a "sleep study".

As rested girl said you need to get your boyfriend to a doctor who deals with sleep disorders. Depending on what the doctor recomends it could mean surgury or something as simple as going on a CPAP machine to keep air going into his airway so he does not stop breathing at night. All in all the answer to you questions is that yes your boyfriends problem is treatable but only if he takes the steps to help himself.

My wife used to tell me I stopped breathing at night and I used to think it was no big deal I wake up every morning so there is no problem. Boy was I ever wrong, my sleep study showed that I stopped breathing over 80 times in one hour that is more than once per minute. I just happened to stummble on to a doctor that i went to see for a sinus infection that looked into my throat and asked me if I snored and I said yes, he said pretty bad to I bet. I said I had been told I am pretty loud at times. He told me that I probably had sleep apnea and what the condition was and what could happen if I did not get treated and start to loose some weight. So now I like all the other people here use a CPAP machine to help me breathe at night and am working on loosing the weight.

So do not fret the help your boyfriend needs is out there and you can always find lots of friendly people here that are willing to help with any questions you might have.

Good luck and hope all goes well

I agree with Paul. Keep encouraging your boyfriend to get things checked out. I argued about this with my husband for several years and finally after falling asleep at the wheel, did something about it. My sleep study showed that I stopped breathing 89 times in an hour and my oxygen level dropped dangerously low. That explains a lot of my other health problems such I've had over the years, including neuromuscular problems (I was actually to the point of walking with a cane last year. I'm only 52 and a teacher.) I also have severe high blood pressure and some other conditions, taking about 6 medications a day for.

I've only been on CPAP for about 8 weeks and am feeling better. I have a ways to go yet and am still struggling with some things but I'm moving in the right direction.

This forum gives me the extra "counseling" or "therapy" I need too. Support groups like this are a necessitiy. I live in a small community and too far away for a bigger city to be able to participate in a support group in person. I really appreciate this forum.
CPAP has saved my life!!

As someone new to this, your positive comments are helpful and encouraging to me.

I am curious about the neuromuscular problem you described. Does that involve swelling of lower legs? I've had two doctors look at my swelling. A cardiologist didn't seem concerned about the swelling, but I am.

I've taken the sleep lab test but haven't been told the results yet, so I don't know how bad the apnea is yet. I'm glad to hear the treatments are working for you. For some time I've been waking up frequently in the night, just quickly sitting up and sitting at the edge of the bed, wondering why I woke up, why I felt compelled to sit up, and why I'm not in a rush to lie back down. Now I know.

I know I may have to take the cpap treatment. But I was wondering if sleeping slightly elevated helps at all?
