should I change to cpap or just be patient?

Post by Moby » Wed Aug 08, 2007 10:48 pm

My machine was repaired recently, it wasn't delivering the set pressure, it was hardly blowing at all.

While it wasn't working I changed it from Auto to CPAP. Because of the fault I don't know what pressure it was blowing, I had to increase it nearly every night. I'm suprised how well I felt considering the poor therapy I was getting, and I wonder whether I am one of those who sleeps better on CPAP than Auto. I "crashed" into exhaustion a couple of days before taking the machine in to be mended.

Getting proper therapy again is like starting treatment all over again. A few days of superhuman energy, and now that's all gone. I could sleep all day.

Question

a) would I be better setting it on continouus pressure, and if so, at which setting?

b) Or should just be patient and wait a bit longer?

numbers.

I'm sleeping 9+ hours a night. Leak rates satis (0.4max, usually 0.2).

AI range from 0.3-1.2.

HI about 5.2. I do toss and turn a fair bit in the night.

Pressure ~ 13, lowest 11.6 highest 13.4

I've set the pressure a 9.8 -14. I set it at under 10 minimum because I read (thanks Snoredog) that more than 10 min. changes the algorhythm. That adjustment has brought the AHI down a little.

your numbers look fine, I wouldn't change anything.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Thanks Snoredog.

I'll just be patient.

Moby,

It COULD be that you're having more events at the lower end of your pressure range.....before it can raise the pressure to what will keep them at bay.

Only YOU can know the answer to those questions.....after you try the options.
Give your present settings some time, but don't be afraid to try straight pressure.
Everybody's different.

Good luck.

Moby - I THINK I feel better on straight cpap. My advice? TEST DRIVE. Do a one-week test, check your data, and record how you feel.

Numbers are great, but if you feel crappy, what do they really say?

I got my one week results back from my APAP test drive, and I think I want to ramp my straight cpap pressure up to 12 or 13. But I now have to test drive THAT theory and see how I feel. So, a couple more weeks testing.

Cheers,
Barbara

Moby, like all posts, YMMV, but I've found out that I feel tons better on CPAP mode than APAP mode. Some folks do, some folks don't. Whichever way you go, you might want to give it several nights before coming to any conclusions....one night usually isn't enough.

Good luck!
