Nasal pillows and unusual shaped nares

Post by wading thru the muck! » Thu Nov 04, 2004 2:13 pm

Does anybody have any experience with using nasal pillows in a nose with nares that are non-round/oval?

I would like to try a nasal pillow interface but I am concerned about leakage and/or irritation as my left nare is cresent shaped due to a deviated septum.

I have a cartilage "bump" just inside my left nostrel.

Does anyone make pillows that can be formed to fit?
Sincerely,

nasal pillows

Wader, I'm no expert on oddly shaped nares (those are the nostril openings, in case some are wondering..."nares"???)

With my Breeze, I prefer a larger size of nasal pillows than I probably "technically" would be measured for. I like the pillows to sit completely outside my nares, with only the tip of the oval shaped air holes going inside my nostrils - just barely inside and not really touching anything inside my nostrils. I don't want to feel anything "inside my nose". And actually, I found that getting "larger than I probably should have" pillows seal better too. You mileage may vary, but I really don't think the different shape of your nostrils would be a problem in getting a good seal with nasal pillows. Two different size/shape nares might be a problem if you were looking at an interface that had to be stuck up into your nose, but I've got a hunch the Breeze pillows will work fine for you.

If this gives you anything to go by when ordering the pillows size, I have an average "woman's face" with small-ish normal, oval shaped nares. I use the "Large" pillows with my Breeze. They sit mostly outside and against my nostrils. If I were going to make a pure guesstimate at what a man might want to order, I'd think the combo that comes with Large and Extra Large (not the dilator size!) pillows might work, even if one nare is considerably smaller or more squished than the other.

The Breeze is my favorite since I sleep mostly on my sides. If you like to sleep a lot on your back, you might want to consider the Swift instead, since it has no head gear on the back of the head. Swift comes with all three sizes of "cylinder/pillows". The Swift's pillows are as comfy as the Breeze's pillows on me, but the Swift's are "built-in" so you wouldn't be able to use two different sizes at once, the way you could with the Breeze (e.g. large pillow for one nostril and extra large for the other.)
