Having trouble falling asleep on CPAP

Post by Jeanie821 » Wed Jul 18, 2007 8:08 am

I started the CPAP almost a week ago, with a titration of 14 cm. I find, though, that while I stay asleep once it happens (maybe waking once), falling asleep has been difficult. I can't fall asleep without some background noise, but the usual methods (either the local traditional religious station or a nature sounds cassette) haven't been working, and with all of the meds I take, I don't want to add a sleep aid.

Any suggestions? Anything would be appreciated.

A few months ago I read an article about the health benefits from "deep breathing". Now upon putting on my mask I start deep slow breathing exercise. this consists of belly breathing slowly and the COMPLETE exhalation. I find that before I finish the 20 minutes of exercise I am asleep.
This method is supposed to lower blood pressure and help with weight loss.
You really need to fill and completely empty the lungs for it to help.
I just want to go back to sleep!

If your situation allows, try ear plugs. It is possible that the sound of the machine rising and falling with each breath makes you anxious. I find I sleep better with good earplugs AND pur-sleep.

I took nature sounds and made a cd (MP3) files that played all night. (Because I found out when the sounds ended I'd wake up)

Now I have a 10000 BTU A/C running, I no longer need the sounds. I also watch TV, (a No NO), but it set it to auto off in 20 minutes. That's what works for me, I don't want to add med's either, enough of those. Jim
