spontaneous arousals ? im confused

Post by andyomega » Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:24 am

Hello, I am still sleepy.

My PSG said I have around 30 hypopneas and 30 spontaneous arousals per hour.
I asked him what the arousals are caused by and he said he didnt know.
Are they caused by hypopneas? that is what another doctor told me.
He said that as my air flow restricts my brain says wake up.
I am on apap therapy and I do feel better but still have some troubles.

Can anyone shed some light about these spontaneous arousals?

Thank you.
-Andy

The arousals caused by hypopneas are just that: caused by hypopneas - partial breathing obstructions.

Spontaneous arousals are spontaneous, that is, their cause - at this point -is unknown.

They would label an arousal "spontaneous" because they can detect the arousal but cannot detect a reason for it with the sensors attached to you during the test.

Having only been through my tesing and not yours, I could guess that some external stimuli might such as a smell, a discomfort (maybe one of the electrodes was poking you) may have caused you to be disturbed. I wouldn't worry too much, in may not be an issue in any other circumstances.
