pure soap

Post by jpu1969 » Fri Apr 27, 2007 10:19 pm

Where do you buy the pure soap that these nasal mask manufactures recommend using to clean the mask?

I have been all over town and no one sells it?

I use Dawn citrus antibacterial liquid hand soap, been using it since I started cpap, got 2 years use out of a UltraMirage Full Face just to see if I could do it, I still have that cushion as back up.

The dish soap version would probably work just as good.

If I was a mask manufacturer, I'd probably tell you how to clean a mask so it only lasts 3 months also. But the fact is you can make them last much longer and it doesn't take any special soap to do it.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Some ppl use baby wash.

Pure soap might be castille available at a health food store. Dr. Bonners is a brand name of a liquid soap. It is available unscented.

However, I rarely wash my mask with soap. I wipe off the nasal pillows every so often with tissues.

i USE DAWN DISHWASHING SOAP OR BABY SHAMPOO TO WASH MY MASK. IN BETWEEN I USE BABY WIPES THAT ARE UNSCENTED TO WIPE THE MASK AND SEAL DOWN. DON'T GO CRAZY WITH THE CLEANING YOUR THE ONLY ONE THAT WEARS IT. PAT

Pure Soap

Post by Rafe » Fri Apr 27, 2007 10:38 pm

jpu1969,

Like you, I read the instructions and went looking for pure soap. Couldn't find any either. So, I went on the internet and found the following:

http://www.sungoldsoap.com/

Bought a gallon. Not sure how necessary it is, but I use it to wash my nasal pillows daily.

I'd like to piggyback on your question to ask a related one.

I'm currently living in France, and as far as I can tell it's virtually impossible to find soaps without moisturizers and fragrances here, even in the health food stores. I don't know exactly what the issues are with moisturizers and fragrances, etc., with regard to cleaning masks.

So, here's my question: What ingredients should absolutely be avoided because they would harm the silicone?

Maybe looking at it from that angle will help me choose a soap...

Before I would use a soap with a moisturizer, I would try a dish soap. I use dawn dishwashing liquid on my mask, and xpap parts. Works great.

I use a spray purchased from my DME. Last time I was there they have added wipes in a can.

Any reason they seem to mention Dawn in particular? Or will any "degreasing" and nonmoisturizing dish soap do?

My RT said to use Ivory bar soap and just make a foam with it in warm water. Someone else told me that Neutrogena sells a pure liquid soap that works well.

The idea seems to be to avoid smells and antibacterial stuff.

I use Neutrogena on mine. Actually, I use Neutrogena as my body soap (I love it because it doesn't leave soap film in your shower - less cleaning!)and I take my nasal piece into the shower with me and wash it every morning.

I'm also in the category of Dawn dishwashing liquid (seems to be popular) WHEN I get around to cleaning mine. I'm also not worried about "germs", since I'm the only one who wears it. Two years on the same mask and seals....and it still looks almost new.

This is good to know. I am using Dove unscented, but it does have moisterizers in it so I should probably switch. I wash my nasal pillows and oral cushion every morning, but only because it seals better when I do.
