I have strep throat
I woke up during the night of Sunday a.m. and had an awful headache. When I got up yesterday morning, my throat was killing me. I looked and my poor tonsils were almost completely white. YUCK!!
I tried to sleep with my bipap last night, but it just hurt too much. I am on meds, so hopefully, this will go away before long.
I was wondering how does being sick affect treatment? Can some of you push through and continue sleeping with the mask or do you have to give it up for a while until your throat is no longer hurting?
Just wondering.

Mommy,
How did they get the culture back so fast?
I guess whether or not some one uses the machine depends on there illness and there apnea.
Some people may die or have a stroke or something if off the machine.
I hope tonight is better for you.
Can you get a spray that soothes your throat?

I'm so sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. I have only had one little cold since starting cpap and I was still able to use my machine. Feel better soon!

I had to sleep without cpap when I developed a sore on the bridge of my nose. Found I was so habituated to the mask I had trouble sleeping without it. I elevated my head and slept on my side to minimize the apnea events. I have read that some people sleep in chairs to keep their heads elevated even more. Whatever you try, good luck and get well soon.

strep
Strep is not as common in adults as viral throat infections.
Even in children a positive strep test in the presence of a severe red throat lesion does not mean a person is infected with strep.
But this is totally ignored by many doctors and cover their fannies by prescribing antibiotics.
Strep bugs are in a certain pct of children's throats at all times and do not cause infections.
It is only when the strep themselves are infected by a virus that causes it to be pathogenic.
So in the majority of the cases when a doc prescribes antibiotics following a positive strep are actually having a viral infection and the treatment is useless.
Bottom line is that a strep infection is actually a viral infection, or the result of a viral infection.
But take the drugs and in ten days it will go away and you praise the drugs. Same thing happens if nothing is given.
This is a case where herbs and chiropractors are so helpful. The patient is going to get better anyway.
Oh Well.
And keep in mind that all the moms who take their kids for antibiotics every time something seems wrong will later in life have severe allergies.
go figure.

Don't be discouraged. Strep throat can be dangerous and even deadly if not treated properly. Taking your antibiotics is the safest way to go.
You can also put a tennis ball in a sock and safety-pin it to the back of your PJs to keep yourself from rolling onto your back (can aggravate apnea) until you are able to use your machine again.
Rest up as well as you can and get better.
By the way, no kisses, that passes around strep

Before I got my tonsils yanked in December, I would deal with strep about 3-5 times a winter. I was always able to crank up the humidity and get through it using my cpap. This was the first winter that I can remember not dealing with strep.
I am not sure about Tomjax comments. They might be true in general, but not for me. I could "taste" the strep and if I didn't go the Doc, it would keep getting worse. But if they put me on antibiotics, it would usually be much better in 24-48 hours. My Doc is very conservative on antibiotics, but usually didn't hesitate if the test was positive for strep . True strep is something that can really have some nasty effects if left untreated.
I am guessing if you have true strep, you will feel better fairly quickly. Try tuning up the humidity, but if that doesn't work, I'll bet within a night or two you will easily be able to go back on the machine. Hope you feel better soon. I know strep can be nasty.

Rapid Strep Test takes a few minutes minutes. How did they get the culture back so fast?
It is dangerous to not properly treat strep throat as it can progress into scarlet fever and rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever can cause severe damage to heart valves. Having rheumatic fever is not at all fun, I had it when I was about 7 years old.

And change your toothbrush! My mom and sister had strep off and on for about a year. Someone finally figured out they were reinfecting themselves with their toothbrushes. And, no, they did not use the same toothbrush for a year - they just used it when they were infected and didn't change it when they were better.Wistful wrote:By the way, no kisses, that passes around strep
I'm kind of a freak about toothbrushes. I usually change to a new one once I start antibiotics and then another new one after I'm better.
Yep. This happened to my nephew.Bearded_One wrote:It is dangerous to not properly treat strep throat as it can progress into scarlet fever

Feeling MUCH better
I am much better today. I didn't sleep with my mask for a couple of nights, but did fine last night. I slept really well. I was put on a Z-pac and they worked great. This is the first time that I have had this in about 15 years. I used to get it all of the time, but it hurts more the older you get!!
