Periodic Limb Movement--learned neural pathways?

Post by Wantok » Wed Feb 28, 2024 6:19 am

Anyone heard of successful treatment of PLMD by retraining neural pathways? Thanks in advance.

Hi Wantok. Sorry I hadn't stopped in for a few days. Just saw your messages. First, about retraining neural pathways. I feel like there's something to that just due to my journey and seeing how it was a lengthy process to help my PLMD and accompanying stuck thoughts in my brain. Using the TENS was a big part of that. I got the idea to try the TENS because some users claimed it helped them, and I was pretty much out of options. I wish I had professional knowledge on the TENS but I can only speak of my eperience and am not even sure my premises are sound. That said, I initially used the TENS with 4 electrodes like the corners of a square across my buttocks. I placed them as my doctor prescribed for very low back pain. I'm sure these days there's diagrams online regarding placement. My understanding is that the nerve pathways have a limited amount of signals it can transfer at one time, so if you fill them up with signals from the TENS, there's no room for pain or jumpy legs sensations to get through. I believe was in the long term interruption of the PLMD signals that gave my brain a chance to heal and learn to sleep again. My early days were while in the throes of augmentation, so I don't know how my case might be comparable to anyone else's. Some things I read suggested putting the electrodes on the legs on trigger points - that was not what worked for me. I spent weeks trying every combination of placements from the buttocks to the feet. Once I settled in on placement, every night wasn't equally successful, and sometimes I restarted the TENS period over during the night. But over time, I found just about a half hour right before bedtime sufficed. If using TENS without doctor supervision, just be sure to comply with any warnings that come with the unit.

You asked about supplements. After finding my Ferritin Level was at the lower end of the normal range, my sleep doc put me on iron until I got it up near 100, which is recommended for PLMD. Don't remember the type or dosage. Was also on prescription Vitamin D and Magnesium. Also take some B vitamins.

Good luck with things. Consistency and persistence are key.
