Re: Question for the Wisdom of the Group on Power Failures
Pugsy, one simple study is to retrospectively look at a large group of CPAP patients under treatment in an area hit by a hurricane like Florence in Carolina or Irma in FL and see if that cohort has a higher rate of hospitalization or death in the week or two following the storm. These thought leader...

Re: Question for the Wisdom of the Group on Power Failures
I didn't intend this thread to be about utility companies and their merits. It was to bring up the concept that interrupted CPAP therapy may possibly be far more dangerous than I believe most of the medical profession and perhaps many of us believed it to be. Not certain that is true because as far ...

Re: Question for the Wisdom of the Group on Power Failures
I think if it was an event such as a hurricane, most people would have been encouraged to evacuate to safer locations . Hopefully they would have brought their machines. I know that if I was involved in a flood, hurricane or winter disaster, I would not be sleeping much during that period....machin...

Question for the Wisdom of the Group on Power Failures
OK, as some of you may remember, I am a recently retired physician who through almost 40 years of medical practice, always carried a healthy appreciation and respect for all that medical science did not know as well as an understanding and realization that much of what we think we know will turn out...

Re: Wife Has Issues a Few Days Into Treatment
Thank you Pugsy and Chunky... I know how to set the machine, and you are correct, the RT at the DME really was quite clueless, having to leave the room to check things repeatedly. I had asked her to disable to Smart Start feature which she claimed to do but failed as it was on that first night. I as...

Wife Has Issues a Few Days Into Treatment
OK, she is using an S10 Autoset, n30i nasal mask, pressure range set for 5-20cm,, ramp OFF, EPR OFF. She reports a sensation of not getting enough air while trying to fall to sleep which bothers her greatly. If I have this right, the initial pressure on a variable pressure machine is at the low end ...

ResMed's My Air App
I am well aware of how simplistic the My Air App is when compared to SH or its successor Oscar. But it's a quick picture of the previous night without removing an SD card, locking the card, downloading etc. My major objection to the app is the penalty applied for "mask removal" or whatever they call...

Re: Wife Newly Diagnosed... Dueling CPAP Machines
Well, we will have machines enough to open a store...I already have two S10s, both recent acquisitions. One will eventually migrate and live in our FL home. There will also be the wife's S10 and then she will need a FL machine as well. I have also accumulated 3 S9 Elites which can be our travel mach...

Wife Newly Diagnosed... Dueling CPAP Machines
I have been on CPAP for over 5 years, since Feb 2014. I actually look forward to putting on my N30i each night after years of using a p10. Many fewer arousals each night to fix leaking and repositioning. So the wife is headed for the DME next week for her S10 Autoset. Not sure which mask she'll end ...

Re: frequent nighttime urination
Physician here, recently retired, OSA under treatment for 5 1/2 years. A very common cause of nocturia is peripheral edema, swelling of one's lower legs, ankles and feet as we stand upright much of the day. Contributing to peripheral edema are excessive salt intake and some degree of venous insuffic...

Re: DME woes
Why oh why is it so difficult to be a good DME?? Seriously, I've thought about opening my own DME store so I could provide accurate orders, fast shipping, and plain old excellent customer support. Why is it so hard for them to do a good job?!?!? 10 years on CPAP now and I STILL can't find a reliabl...

Re: New & Skeptical
Without any disrespect meant to the original poster, if I were a smoker or recent ex-smoker with a BMI of 50 (that translates to 5'4" and 295 lbs.), I would be less suspicious of my doctors and more welcoming of any kind of medical assistance that might help end the potential death spiral that I was...

Re: Very Disappointed in Scientific American Magazine
SA was once a fairly well respected magazine... decades ago. For many years, it has morphed into a sensationalist "pop-culture science" magazine with very little value. Pay it little heed or attention... it is not deserving of more!

Re: Can Spo2 average of 94% lead to high HGB 17.4?
Speaking as a physician, though obviously not your physician, a high hemoglobin level (above 17 in a male) should lead to screening for hemochromatosis, a disorder of iron metabolism. Another consideration is a condition called polycythemia vera. Other causes could be chronic lung disease such as CO...

Re: What would you like to see in the next generation of CPAP devices?
My machine wish list reflects the limited real estate space on many bedside tables. For that reason alone, I would pay up for a model that contained a small digital alarm clock and at least one USB charge port. Furthermore, rather than the curved top surface seen on the ResMed S10 models, I would we...
