Question about possible mold / bacterial contamination

Post by Sovenator » Thu Oct 05, 2023 2:50 pm

Hello,

I recently started using an AirCurve 10 at night about 3 months ago. I made a mistake... Up until now, I would clean all components at night right before bed but neglected to empty the water tank in the unit during the day, so the tank sat in the unit during the day. Nothing really had a chance to dry out (I won’t do that again, I know now it was a mistake).

Yesterday, I found bits of slimy, pinkish substance in the corners of the humidifier tank (mold, bacteria, not sure). A family colleague who is an epidemiologist thought it is likely Serratia marcescens bacteria, but can be certain.

I scrubbed the tank with a small brush and soaked it in vinegar then soap/water, soaked all the other components in vinegar water, and left them to dry. When I scrubbed the tank with a small brush + vinegar, all the discoloration appeared to disappear, along with all the biofilm or whatever that was. I’m going to clean the components again. I understand if it’s mold, all of it may not be eliminated.

When I go online, I read that some people say you should toss the whole unit if there’s even a suspicion of mold because of spores and hard-to-clean areas of the unit, etc. Is this overkill?

What would you suggest? Epidemiologist family colleague didn't seem horribly concerned but said of course the risk isn't zero.

Should I replace the tank? All the components? The whole unit? Do nothing except clean it better from here out?

I was uncertain about the internal unit where things could not be visualized (like the blower unit inside the machine). The tank was sitting connected to the machine full of water, but everything else at least looked fine from what I could visualize. There’s no way to see the inner parts of the machine.

Pictures attached.

Personally, I wouldn't do any more than what you just did. You might want to buy a new water tub and keep the old one as a backup.

I have been using CleanSmart. I referred to it by a fellow CPAP user who experienced exactly the same problem as the OP. He is an engineer who did extensive research on this since the funk kept coming back and CleanSmart fixed the problem completely.

I have the original water chamber in my 18 month old ResMed AS10 for Her. It looks as good as when I got it.

From the web site: CleanSmart uses all-natural Hypochlorous that is tough on germs, yet gentle. CleanSmart won't damage equimpement or irritate skin. Made in USA.

It kills 99.9% of bacteria, mold, fungus and viruses.

I like the wording of Sleeprider's post on this, over yonder:

https://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Threa ... ifier-tank

However, if someone is immune-compromised in any way, then I would personally work hard to keep it from growing on/in any part of anything near the lungs. There's enough of it already blowing around in the air wherever humidity allows it.

You can pay $12 for a 16-oz. bottle of CleanSmart spray (https://www.amazon.com/CleanSmart-CPAP- ... 1_1_sspaor) or $3.49 for a 16-oz. bottle of hydrogen peroxide spray (https://www.cvs.com/shop/cvs-health-hyd ... did-866952). Hydrogen peroxide spray works just as well.

Take any ordinary product, add "CPAP" to the label, and multiply your profit margins by 40.

So how much would we all save if we were to call this place just "talk.com"?

When we used distilled water from walmart, the pink slime happened.
It does not with our home distiller.
I don't trust some of the "distilled water" out there.
Or the people selling it.

when they started putting wheels on suitcases
HEY! when i first arrived in seattle in 1979, i worked for skyway luggage as a receiving clerk. i unloaded, stocked and delivered many a very heavy box of casters. (luggage wheels) not only was this my big break in order to pay my rent, it was also where i met my soon-to-be wife.

so let's not disparage "putting wheels on suitcases".

btw, is it luggage or suitcase?

(there, i've really taken this thread off topic!)
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Me too.
Look a the price of a new humidifier tank, and ask yourself if it's worth your peace of mind. Because if your knowledgeable friend's info didn't make you feel it's OK....
An internet search will always bring up many opinions - how would you know which to trust?

FWIW

I have a range of sanitisers available to me because I brew my own craft beers.

Starsan or No Rinse Sanitiser are what I use on my Humidifer Tank a couple of times a week.
I shake the tank dry after a soaking and let it air dry upside down.
I empty and dry the tank every day same.

I use Miltons Baby gear steriliser on my mask and tube after a wash in soft detergent..
I cant see that having any harm on the silicone mask but I dilute it anyway.
I fill the tube with the solution and join the ends into a loop...let soak for 30 mins then empty and twirl out the excess solution.
I hang it to dry on the heated towel rail.

Tell your wife:
Save the Dawn Powerwash sprayer container. Fill with a mixture of 13 oz of distilled water, 2 oz of Dawn Dish Soap and 1 oz of Isopropyl Alcohol. You just made Dawn Powerwash for pennies. And saved 1 plastic container from the ocean. You're welcome.

I'm saving this recipe.
Thanks.

Perhaps your issue has something to do with the fact that you never clean your equipment?

I've been using Wally's distilled water since day one and I never had an issue with any colors in my water reservoir.

No, it is caused by using Distilled water with "Minerals Added" which is normally sold in the baby section. If there is no distilled in the regular water area some employees who don't realize its for a cpap will direct people to it.

Using water with minerals in it and/or leaving wet/moist things out in the open air to dry are IMHO worse than not cleaning.

Bottom line - "Read the label".

I DO clean my tank--when it needs it.
The walmart pink slime appeared IMMEDIATELY after cleaning the tank!
And ONLY with walmart DW.
I had to dump that jug.
Now I only use home distilled--no pink slime!
