Cosistency

Post by djen9999 » Sun Mar 04, 2012 7:19 am

Does anyone have consistent numbers night after night? My numbers are good but they fluctuate wildly. My AHI has been as high as 11.35 (still good) to as low as .75 (How I would love a consistent reading of .75!) Am I asking for too much or am I looking at the numbers too closely?

I don't have consistent numbers every night. That's one of the biggest challenges to making this work. There will always be nights that are better than others and the ultimate goal of successful therapy is the low numbers. Therefore, it's good to look at your data so you can spot trends, evaluate why a particular night was better or worse than your usual results, etc. General rule of thumb, if AHI is at, or lower than 5, you are doing OK.

11.35 is not good, it may be an improvement from before cpap but until the AHI is under 5, you still need to work on it.

Some fluctuation is normal, but large differences can mean there is a problem. Did you have higher leaks? Mouth breath? Eat differently? Drink? There are many reasons to have a bad night once in a while, sometimes you can't figure out what caused it. BUT if you are consistantly having large swings in AHI, there is something wrong. I would look at leaks first.

A lot depends on your body and how it reacts to the environment and what you eat, drink and breathe.

Consistency does happen.
Ask for what you want, look at the numbers closely.
Persistence, perseverance, attention to detail.....

I have very consistent results.... I average and AHI of 1.5 almost all the time. Some nights as low as 0.3 or an occasional 2.0, but mostly 1 or 1.5. My data is consistently boring It's a good thing!

I misspoke when I said that 11.35 was good. I meant that it was an improvement from my sleep study #'s. I just checked my #'s for the period of time that I've had the machine (244 days) and overall they're not that bad. AHI is 3.53, CA is .40, OA is 1.84 and H is 1.25. Leaks were a major problem in the beginning as I dealt with the learning curve in adjusting the straps and positioning the pillows properly. It is pretty much a flat line now near 4.

Diet and drink are interesting factors. I stopped drinking alcohol before I was legally allowed to start. Caffeine may be a problem. I love my coffee and It doesn't keep me awake, but it may be the factor that caused some of the spikes in my AHI. I've cut back recently and I no longer drink coffee after 6:00 pm. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks to everyone who responded. It forced me to look at my numbers and re evaluate a few things.
