Without getting into the whole Islet transplant/stem cell research debate it is is quite encouraging when islet transplant stories of success come out. But this is not a new area of experimental treatments, esp. for Type 1 diabetics, who are the ''smaller'' group proportionally who suffer from diabetes. Most common is type 2. Most type 2's still produce insulin and insulin resistance, quite prevalent in type 2's. I am a type 2, but am on insulin BUT, and again a BIG BIG BUT, since I am on apap, my numbers have DROPPED significantly. But, this is not a cure all, or even a positive for many pap'ers, who have posted on this board, that their numbers do not reflect a change, and in some cases an increase.

It is a puzzle, the whole metabolic process. All I know is treating the apnea has helped me in another area. I am not a dr, no expert just someone who shares their diabetic observations only.

Several decent diabetic magazines have indexes where if someone is interested in the islet transplantation, they can refer back for older articles. ADA is a good resource.......................

My 9 year old son Torrey was diagnosed March 7, 2004 with Type I Diabetes. This subject brings hope and mixed emotions.

The problem is that there is not enough to go around and the expense of the procedure. If you have lots of money the possibility of this procedure might be a reality.

Bottom line, if we died tomorrow would we benefit anyone? People please consider becoming donors. It makes a world of difference to people who need organs and are just waiting.
