Mold, throat infections for a year. Humidifier cpap

Post by Ruinednose » Tue May 22, 2018 9:51 pm

For a year, every 3 weeks I get throat red spots, itchiness, bad nasal drainage.

On azelestine spray currently, tonight I decided to check the silicone parts in my humidifier half of my Bipap (system one 50). The top part seal had black stuff on less than half of it. I suspect it was mold. I replaced all silicone parts and cleaned the whole humidifier half.

Stupid me. For years I have not checked or cared about those parts, I would always clean/replace, mask stuff hose and humidifier chamber.

I'm hoping that this is the cause to my frequent throat /sinus problems. Is the black mold?

Please don't overlook these parts like I did, I payed heavily for it. I'm hoping this was it.

I'll clean those parts every 3 days from now on.

I also cleaned the nozzle of the actual cpap going into the humifier half, but I couldn't get deep access.

Anything else I need to do? I'm such an idiot, I can't believe myself

Ouch, sorry to hear :(
As somebody with a stuffy nose, too, where exactly were those parts?
Were you using distilled water? Emptying it every morning?

In the humidifier part of the machine, take the water chamber out. Look inside and you'll see 3 pieces of silicone, top, center and left. Remove them and clean them. Mine were disgusting, I only got myself to blame.

They were so disgusting that I cleaned them very good but also just ordered new ones. Very inexpensive.

Thank you!!!! I don't clean my humidifier chamber very much, just use distilled water and sight check it every so often  , today because of your post I thought I would take the chamber out and give it a good cleaning.... to my surprise I had a small amount of pink slime in the corners  Its a damn good thing I have a new spare chamber for tonight, now both chambers are in my sink soaking in vinegar and water.
I have been on the hose for over 8 years and have never had any kind of slime or mold in there, guess I just got TOO complacent and have not been doing my due diligence with cleaning. Again, THANK YOU for making me check more often from now on.
Cheers
Nan

To the OP:

Other posters already advised you to use only distilled water and empty it every morning. Note that if you live in the U.S., distilled water sells for 88¢ per U.S. gallon (3.78 liters) at Walmart.

If you're traveling and can't get distilled water, just use any potable water and clean really well when you get home.

I just found an easier solution. After almost 8 years, I am able to use a PAP without a humidifier.

Same here, put HH in the travel bag dry, still clean and dry. But Even with unwashed HH tanks, I've had very little problems with infections, way less than before XPAP. Jim

Perfectly accurate, yet totally useless.

Do you work for Microsoft Support?

Yes, saying that 99.997% of DH's posts are crap would be more accurate.

50:50 water:white vinegar rinse of ALL silicone parts after washing. Hard plastic mask shell gets rinsed too. I use Contour wipes for really lazy nights (once/twice week).

Don't need humidifier in summer but in winter gets washed twice week and sprayed with 100% white vinegar and sits a few mins before rinsing and drying. I also check the housing and pull out and wash the silicon seal.

Oh, and replace filter every few weeks, weekly during pollen season.
