OT: Cataract Surgery

Post by bigdave36 » Sun May 20, 2018 3:24 pm

Hi,
I had cataract surgery on my left eye on Friday. I was told to wear a shield over my eye so I don't accidentally rub it at night. Both nights the tape has come loose and the shield has fallen off. I used 2 different types of tape too. I think, from my movement, the mask straps are taking it off.
Tonight I thought I would wear my wrap-around safety glasses. Any other suggestions?
Thanks...Dave

I suggest that you discuss this issue with the surgeon and/or the sleep doc.

For everyone else (and the OP in any future instance), make sure to discuss CPAP with the surgeon before having any procedure (including dental surgery).

I was a little surprised when my husband and I had cataract surgery by the same doctor(a few years apart) because he was required to use eye protectors and I wasn't. Would your glasses fit over your protector without applying pressure? Can you wear your glasses with your mask? You might also try taping your mask straps to your cheek.

I had no problem using medical tape fromWalgreens. My Quattro was not affected by the shield.

Facial oils may interfere with tape adhesive.
An unscented baby wipe should help.
An alcohol swab works even better, but keep it away from your eyes.

Your safety glasses are a great choice. My Mom ended up doing this as well.

I was going to have cataract surgery almost a year and a half ago, but I lost faith in the ophthalmologist so I just couldn't see my way clear to going forward. True story.

I used the safety glasses last night, they worked great. Thanks to all who responded.

Eventually, you likely will have to do something, so my suggestion is to start looking for an ophthalmologist that you can have faith in. My Mom put it off until she felt she could no longer drive safely (she was 82). She's had her ups and downs with it since then, but the change in eye dominance may have been caused by waiting a bit too long for surgery. Mostly settled out now though.

I guess I was lucky. We have a local doctor that has done over 13,000 cataract surgeries. We had him do mine and my wife's. Neither of us have had any problems with the new lenses.

Sorry for the pun, couoldn't resist! :D

The story: Went to this doc's father for 30 years. He took over his father's practice. His father had said my cataracts were too small to do, but son thought otherwise.

The son then told me that I needed to use all the fancy lasers that weren't covered by any insurance at $1300 per eye, that using the laser warms something and makes sticking less likely.

mmmmkay from what I read on the 'net, that claim is dubious at best. He is a part owner in the surgical center, so he owns a piece of that business, and the charges that he brings in.

Then at the last minute, I'm told about this new eyedrop he wants me to use. They sell it at the practice. It's pretty much untested in his practice... The "old" drops you had to do 4 times a day 2 different drops (or some schedule like that) with these drops no advance usage then only twice a day (or some such).

The medicine is only $90.

I looked up the compounding pharmacy online and found that they charge the doctor $20.

Now, everyone is entitled to make a profit. But I suddenly got the feeling that the son was in it for the cash and not necessarily the best interest of his patient. He just has so many conflicts off interest between me, my insurance, my wallet and his pocket. That bottle of eyedrops for $90 cost him probably 5 thousand dollars between the two eyes.

I couldn't shake that feeling, those lingering doubts as to whether he really thinks I need the surgery, the laser, the drops or am I paying thousands of dollars for no real benefit. So I cancelled the surgery.

Oh boy, I can't see mine not even having posterior glaucoma. I have Scheuermann, limited back mobility, just not able to twist it enough...
Also they told me the difference between seeing the a** from a train or from a woman, assuring me that if I see the first one I could be sure to have missed it

Oups, sorry for such a bad one... it must be a problem with my point of view ...
