Wife is having Bloating

Post by sddarkman619 » Thu May 17, 2018 1:18 pm

My wife's bloating comes when she's on her side.
While on her back she is fine, but when on her side.

If she's on her back she is totally fine. it's only when on her side usually, doesn't' sleep on her belly much but likes her side and that's where the problem lies.(literally)

The bloating is so bad that she has to take a gas pill to get some relief from the bloating.
So she can only use her APAP when on her back and takes it off when she wanted some side time.
She also uses a chin strap to keep her mouth shut.

any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you!

Need more info...Fill in the Machine, mask, pressure setting in your control panel. How long on CPAP? Download sleepyhead software.

Airsense 10 autoset
EPR: 3
Min pressure 8 max pressure 15
Nasal Pillows
On this for 3+ years.
Doing great on her back, just on her side is the issue.
Using Resmed Rescan Software.

Has this been happening for the entire 3 years, or did the gas just start?
If this is new, get her to her doctor.
I got hideous gas when my gall bladder was going bad.
Worst pain ever!

That would seem to suggest that she is swallowing air, which makes me think the upper setting is too high. What does the Sleepy Head report show for her normal range? I believe that when sleeping on your side you need less pressure. If her normal range is say 11-13, with only brief excursions higher or lower, then you might cut the range down to say 14. This might help. what are your AHI's averaging? I ask that because I have the same machine and I found with the EPR above 1, my AHI's increased dramatically and my doctor said she has found that with the Resmed machines this happens a lot and suggests the EPR be either turned off or set to 1. That's just an aside, I doubt it has any affect on swallowing air.

Sleeping with your chin close to your chest can cause bloating (very painful). But, as mentioned, there are some other medical issues that can cause the problem without cpap being involved at all. Gastric paresis (usually diabetes related, but not always) can cause a similar problem.

It's been happening since she started APAP 4 years ago.
Her gall bladder is fine, She doesn't have diabetes.

We turned her pressure up a couple notches to 16, 3 months ago in March as she was taking her mask off and gasping for air at that time, since then she has not been taking her mask off or gasping.
Her EPR was on 3 which I heard can reduce the bloating possibly but I am turning it down 1 notch starting tonight to see what happens.
I am also turning her pressure down 1 notch to 15.

The 1 week gap you see is when we went camping.

here's her current stats:
