Got a machine....Water-boarding comes to mind<LOL>

Post by Eradicator » Wed Apr 25, 2018 6:25 am

The rep came out to my home last Thursday and set me up with the machine. I have no idea what's good/bad or indifferent as far as the machine goes but this is going to be a process for me....I'm committed to it but it's still going to be a process.

FWIW: I only get 2-4hr of sleep a night, barely enough to function and only with meds.

At this point, the machine is only disrupting any sleep I do get so I will need to take time off to get used to it. I'm hoping a 9 day stretch is long enough to at least be acclimated enough go back to work....

Your machine is the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet...an excellent machine.
It is full data and you can use available software to monitor your progress.

You mention water boarding...are you actually getting water in your face or were you just talking about having something in your face in general?

The 2 to 4 hours of sleep....were you having the same insomnia issues prior to starting cpap or has this just started with the start of cpap?

Set the thing on a table or ? a few inches lower than your head so the water runs back to it and not into your mask.

I took that eradicator was referring to feeling like suffocation not water. Eradicator are you referring to suffocation or water spray in the nose/face?
Please let us know.

Thank you very much for the info on my machine. I assumed when they told me that is was a "smart" machine, it would be a decent machine. NO, I should have been clearer but I am not getting any water but as GWC pointed out, but just the feeling of being suffocated.

The machine comes with an electro-hose which can be preheated..it also comes with a seperate that does not contain the wiring so it may be easier.

"The 2 to 4 hours of sleep....were you having the same insomnia issues prior to starting cpap or has this just started with the start of cpap?"--good question but two of my last GF's both said they worried when I stopped breathing....so that goes back 14 years....but I never had an issue with sleeping (more than a couple days) until last Nov.....been on this rollercoaster since. I'm hoping the machine will help.

The suffocation feeling....might be something as a simple starting pressure adjustment could fix that.

Go get this manual...it's different from your user manual.
https://sleep.tnet.com/home/files/resme ... -guide.pdf

Go into the clinical menu setup area and check to see what all your settings are and come back and report what you are using now and let's see what can be done to help.
Often these machines are dispensed with settings starting so low that people feel like they are suffocating. They aren't but it can sure feel like it and it makes for a hard time going to sleep.

So...what do you see for

Mode? Auto or CPAP?
Ramp...on or off and if on...starting pressure and for how long.
EPR...is it on or off? If on what is it set at?
Minimum pressure?
Maximum pressure?

Did you have an in lab sleep study with a mask and machine to try to find optimal pressures or did you just have the diagnostic sleep study to determine sleep apnea and get sent home with a machine to find the right pressure?

The minimum pressures that these machines are defaulting to...most people simply don't feel like enough air is moving at those lower pressures. Easily fixed but let's see what you are starting with first.

The first thing to check is the ramp. A ramp is exactly as the dictionary definition of that word implies. It will start at a pressure lower than your prescription and build up over time (anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes), to your prescribed minimum pressure. Try lower the time time, raising the initial pressure, or just disabling the ramp completely. This ramp is a "comfort" feature. It is governed by patient preference, not medical considerations.
