OT: Really??
OT: Really??
Just got back from dinner at a nice restaurant. Not a reservation type place but a decent restaurant. Now, get ready for this: a man two tables away from us was sitting with a cpap MASK on his face! I tried not to stare but I couldn't help it because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He would take the mask off, eat for a few minutes and then would put the mask on. I saw the machine but I'm not sure what it was. He was seated near a wall but I couldn't tell if the machine was plugged in. The mask looked like an Amara View but I'm not sure. I suppose there could have been oxygen involved but I didn't see that. Fortunately, the way I was facing I don't think he realized I was watching, at least I hope he didn't. He was with several other people who were talking and eating. Anyone have a guess about this? I still can't figure it out. Maybe he was trying to get used to using the mask?

Re: OT: Really??
Just guessing that the person's breathing was compromised in a way unrelated to sleep. Have a friend with COPD who uses a machine when she is having trouble breathing. Also, some neuromuscular diseases cause a person to need assistance with breathing. When my stepson was in still his early stages of ALS his ASV machine did the work his diaphragm could no longer do. He could manage for short times without it early on. But I have to admit, I have never seen anyone take their machine to a restaurant. Must have been an effort to maintain some semblance of normalcy in their life.

What Kathy said.
We have a friend with post polio syndrome who does not have sleep apnea, but she uses a CPAP machine sometimes during the day because it makes breathing easier.

Cpap isn't just for sleeping, one would think you'd been around long enough to have learned that.
There was a guy a while back that was needing to get his wired up on battery to use on his wheelchair, to help with his respiratory issues.
Hell, it may not have even been cpap... could have been another respiratory assist device.

Re: OT: Really??
Wonder if it was an oxygen concentrator...my wife's mother has a portable oxygen concentrator that she uses when she's out and about because of low blood oxygen. The mask she uses looks a lot like a cpap mask at first glance, but smaller tubing. I'm sure that you weren't being so impolite as to stare *smile*, so you most likely didn't get a great look at the mask that the person was wearing.
Just a guess, but I wasn't there, so it could have been a cpap *smile*.

We tell folks to wear the mask watching tv, reading or listening to music...... but we really didn't mean him to take it this far!

No need to be your usual obnoxious self, palerider. I've seen people with respiratory devices out and about; most of us have at one time in our lives. This was a cpap machine and I was surprised to see one outside of someone's home. And yes, I did think cpap was just for sleeping. Here we say use the machine when you are sleeping -- not use the machine when you are awake. Guess I missed the thread where the guy needed his cpap machine wired up on battery. And, as far as Chantilly is concerned, that's a whole other story for various reasons.
You could have just as easily said what you did in a much different tone. Try it sometime. It might even work for you.

Especially when we had that recent thread where somebody was trying to get 4 hours "compliance" by using CPAP before they went to sleep without it. PR was his obnoxious self there but it was needed in that situation.

I could get into a lot of things you could do to be a better person online... (and in restaurants, apparently) but why waste my time?

CPAP during wake. Because, hey, why banish to the bedroom what the public needs to see?!
