Replacing Resmed S9 Autoset

Post by fredr500 » Wed Apr 11, 2018 9:05 am

It's been 5 years since I started on CPAP, I've used it every single night and am sleeping much better. I can't say I love being on a hose but it is not a big deal and the benefits are certainly worth it. But you all know that.

My question is what's changed in 5 years? I am due for a new machine (15K+ hours on it), have a lot of stocked supplies (hoses, masks, nose pieces, filters) for the S9 autoset that I really don't want to throw away.

I see there is an S10 autoset model, as well as the great looking AirMini. Should I be looking at these or has someone besides Resmed come out with a better (I know that's subjective) device?

Coming here for my first one kept me from getting a brick, hopefully you can now steer me to the right replacement.

The S9 still works but I've hit my out of pocket for this year already and lose my insurance in less than a year so I want to plan ahead but act now.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Since you are satisfied with your current machine,
there is no reason not to get a duplicate.
Just make sure a new machine is indeed "new".
Dealers are often sneeeeeaky. Beware!
Insist on zero run hours to avoid a used model.

It's not S10...it's AirSense 10...S10 is a chevy truck.  Sorry but it's a pet peeve of mine. ResMed dropped the "S" so I do the same.

I actually suggest staying with the ResMed AirSense 10 model line if you get a new machine...there are some minor improvements in the features but none are earth shattering but they are nice improvements.
If you use or need humidity...I wouldn't go with the Air Mini unless you travel a whole lot and can get by with minimal humidity and want to have mask choices limited. Yeah, it's tiny but you have to give up something to get tiny...and insurance normally won't pay for it anyway.

Stick with something that is pretty much like what you have been using and doing well with.

Keep the old S9 for a backup machine or travel machine. No reason to trash it until it breaks or dies and it's always good to have a spare for the just in case something happens to the other machine times.

You won't be sorry you stuck with ResMed and got the AirSense 10. I love mine...and I also have used S9 models in the past and in fact still have an old one as a back up.

An S10 might slightly damage my nightstand . . .

  It's too tiny of a truck to suit me...I am a F350 girl myself. Bigger the better.

The AirSense 10 is great and I can't think of any reason not to get one.

There is no reason to "throw away" hoses, masks and nose pieces when you change machines. They will work with any machine you choose.

This is mostly true but the only exception to this is the ResMed ClimeLine heated hose will not work with the AirSense 10 models- you'd have to get a ClimateLineAir hose which works with them.

About the hoses....S9 non heated hoses will work just fine on the AirSense 10...the heated hose...no, it won't work.
But everything else will...I am still using S9 filters in my AirSense because those didn't change.

My wife uses an S9 and it has about 10,000 hours on it. It is still working fine. The A10 does offer a few improvements, but not many. That said if you are buying new and don't have any unusual requirement, like an excessive number of central events, then the A10 is a good one to buy. I just did.

The improvements I can think of, over the S9 are:

- more data storage
- wireless transmission of data to your clinician for review if you have that service
- wireless updates to the software
- Auto Ramp feature which works very well for me

There are some cons too in my opinion:

- Controls are now on a sloped front, rather than the top
- SD card removal is a little more awkward than the S9
- you have to buy an optional cover to remove the humidifier, and it doesn't save much in size

That is about it. I assume with a Fred in your name you are male. However, you might want to consider getting the A10 for Her version of the machine. I believe it is the same cost. It offers another mode which responds faster to OA events, and then limits response after 12 cm pressure. Check to be sure before you buy it, but I believe this is an option which can be selected in the Clinical Setup, and you can put it to the standard version if you want. Just gives you a touch more flexibility in how the machine responds.

Wow, thanks for al of the quick feedback. And thanks for helping me keep a truck off my nightstand.

Based on what I'm hearing I will work with my Dr to get a Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset device with a heated hose.

I'll keep my S9 as a backup and travel machine since without the humidifier it is smaller than the 10.

And I'm doing research on the For Her version, thanks. I was under the impression it was just a different cover, but I see it has both "regular" and "for her" settings as well. If my male ego can handle it I don't see a reason not to get the for her. I guess there's always contact paper... I don't understand why they wouldn't offer the for her settings on the base unit, seems kind of sexist to me to think that women need the flowers.

Thanks again to everyone that responded.

The Airsense10 is just a s9 turned up on it's side in a different case. it takes a different water chamber, and different heated hose, the rest of everything, including the filter, would e the same.

No, it isn't "just an s9 turned on its side". As already mentioned it has several features the older S9 does not.

They have made it a little easier for us guys to "tolerate" the For Her version. I recall the S9 For Her had pink trim. Now it is just a lighter colour. You'll have to ignore the artistic leaves on it though.

Why don't they put the feature on the regular machine as optional use? I suspect just marketing. It costs them zero to put the feature in it. I guess it is kind of like the CPU manufacturers. They manufacture far less versions that they sell, and just disable some features/speed to sell them a different price points. No cost difference to them, but they can collect different amounts from the customer though.

It's leaves and not flowers...
But if they bug the guys too much...it's easily fixed.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... plate.html
$20 and plan for a time when there is free shipping.
It's easy to change. I did one not long ago for a guy who just couldn't handle the leaves...he went with the black.
The silver would look good too.

I have had a chance to use both the regular and the for Her apap algorithm. Minor differences but I do well with either and I see no reason in the world why a guy wouldn't like that special algorithm except that ResMed has put it out there that is for the girls and guys are macho about stuff like that. It's all in their head.

I do know of one person who didn't do well with the special algorithm and it was a woman...go figure that one. Unusual case though...not typical by any means. There's always an outlier no matter what we are talking about.

And while ResMed likes to promote the "gentle" part of it...the gentleness is more in the reduction of abrupt changes in pressure.
I rather like it myself. Not as many big drops....not that the drops caused me any problems but I could see where they might for some people.

I always say it is better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it.
