High flow oxygen therapy
My mother-in-law is seriously ill (COPD) and she has a high flow oxygen therapy (10-12 l / m) with humification at 37 degrees Celsius.
Use an AIRVO2 from Fisher & Paykel.
I am worried because the doctor said to use physiological solution for the humidifier rather than distilled water.
Your advice will be very welcome.
Thank you

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
It's a mild salt water solution. It won't harm the chamber, and even if it did, you can replace it. I'd say follow doctor's orders here.Oltremare wrote:My mother-in-law is seriously ill (COPD) and she has a high flow oxygen therapy (10-12 l / m) with humification at 37 degrees Celsius.

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
Thanks rcobourn.
The situation is as follows:
in hospital for 15 days they used water for injectable solutions. When the patient was discharged from the hospital, the doctor said to use the same solution, but it isn't found on the market like that, the doctor said that the physiological solution is fine too.
I am worried about the health of my elderly mother-in-law, she is a very sweet, delicate and fragile woman. I hope the therapy is good too.
I hope my English is acceptable ...
Thank you

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
Saline for injection is 0.9% salt, by weight, in water. You could make a good substitute with kosher salt and distilled water.Oltremare wrote: ↑Tue Apr 10, 2018 1:12 pmThanks rcobourn.

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
The reason for distilled water is to help keep the humidifier clean... not the patient. What the doctor said to use cannot affect your mother in law in any meaningful way.

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
OP is talking about an oxygen humidifier, not a cpap humidifier,
Oxygen humidifiers don't operate by evaporation, they bubble the O2 through the water, and that can, and will, pick up stuff from the water, I imagine that's why they're suggesting saline. (but, that's just a guess)

They're common with oxygen delivery... here's one strapped on the front of a concentrator:

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
Personally I would ask the question on a more appropriate board for people with COPD such as:Oltremare wrote: ↑Tue Apr 10, 2018 9:39 amMy mother-in-law is seriously ill (COPD) and she has a high flow oxygen therapy (10-12 l / m) with humification at 37 degrees Celsius.

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
As a COPDer/CPAPer who uses the exact machine pictured above I'll go out on a limb and guess that saline is being recommend for an acutely ill patient for a myriad of reasons. First, saline has been used for eons as an antibacterial for wound cleansing and treatment. Secondly its cheaper than sterile, deionized or distilled water and can be easily DIY with tap or even well water. Given the bacteria, fungi and bacillus that can be cultured and thrive in moist environs it makes sense that the humidifier container an ideal candidate for a little salinity given its daily use ad infinitum without sterilization. None of this should be interpreted as fact but just my personal gut level instinct.
10-12 L/min is a T-O-N of O2! my machine and the one pictured above is only rated for 5L/min and I doubt its very efficient at much above 4L/min. Additionally a machine like above costs between $600/$700 new. A 10-12L/min machine runs nearer $4k

Do you have a reddit account? I would ask on reddit.com/r/respiratorytherapy. A lot of knowledgeable people on there when it comes to COPD - I know some of the RT's there work for the dme companies that visit people in homes.

Re: High flow oxygen therapy
I thank all of you for your comments.
The situation is very difficult and gets worse as the days go by.
Now, physiological solution is no longer a big problem. My mother-in-law is very tired and depressed.
She lives attached to the oxygen tank for many years.
In 2017, she ended up in the emergency room eleven times and she can't take it anymore and she's letting go. She's thinking about suicide ...
Sometimes life is really hard and me, I hope everything will soon pass.
Thanks again for your precious help and excuse me for my outburst ...
