CPAP Special bed pillow?

Post by Chris8243 » Mon Apr 09, 2018 8:22 am

Wondering if anyone has tried a CPAP pillow? The kind where the sides are cut out or indented for side sleepers? I tend to wake up on my side when my mask moves and air rushes out. I adjust the mask, adjust my pillow so the mask is not resting on it, and fall back asleep but it's a regular problem for me. I tend to be a side sleeper and my sleep doc told me I should sleep on my side for better results.
The pillow looks odd - is it worth trying? They are expensive, hate to spend the money and find out they are just a fad and don't help.

Yes some people do use those special pillows and yes they are expensive.
What I usually suggest people do before spending the big bucks is go to some place like WalMart and get one of the cheap memory foam pillows and make their own cut outs in the foam and see if it helps or not.
If it helps sometimes the cheap version that is homemade is sufficient or sometimes they might then decide to spend the big bucks on the fancier pillow.

Here's the one I use, and I LOVE it! It's also cheaper than the average "cpap pillow". https://www.walmart.com/ip/FIRM-Dreamsw ... /798782616

The best cpap pillow is to cuddle with a lover and sleep after a session of hot monkey sex!!

Yes, I bought one of these

and love it. I even take it with me when I travel, usually.

I have a cpap pillow, not because I needed it, but because it was given to me and I prefer a firm flat pillow. Side sleeping on a pillow my face sinks into is a recipe for mask displacement. Sleeping with the front of the face off the edge can keep some masks from getting pushed by the pillow.

This is actually the one I also use. It doesn't have the cut out things but I can easily move the hulls around and make a little nest for my mask if I need it on my side or even on my stomach. I have never needed a cut out.
I am not very big...small shoulders and long skinny neck. Most of the regular pillows of any kind are too "tall" for my head and neck..
This one I actually removed some of the hulls and set them aside for later use if needed so that the pillow was more suited to my short stature and didn't put my head/neck in an awkward bind.

It's not cheap but I have never regretted buying it...and I have been using it or its prior before the improved versions since 2009.
I also have a bad neck...eat up with arthritis so bad that I have metal plates in the spine to stabilize things to keep my head from falling off. The support for the neck is perfect for whatever position I end up in. I just scrunch the hulls into position that seems to keep the neck in best alignment for the position I choose. A little taller for side sleeping and a little flatter for when I am on my back.
Even if I didn't use cpap I would most likely use this pillow just for the neck relief I get with it.

I even still have the very first one I bought back in 2009 before he add the foam pieces and it was smaller and just hulls...I use it for back support when I am on my side and my back is acting up. The support to lean against the hulls really helps my aching back feel better.

Not everyone loves it...that's the life of any product.
For some it's too firm and for some the hulls seem to make annoying noise.
I don't remember the return policy but if someone is interested..be sure to check out the return policy. I don't remember exactly what it entails but I think there is a return policy if you hate it.

The guy who came up with this pillow and some other cool sleep cpap stuff...is a forum member here.
Great guy. Tries really hard to please people...even the ones that you can't ever please if you now what I mean.

I think I must have had this particular model..maybe 4 years now. It's been a long time.

I have 2 of these - the original one I keep at or summer place, one for home and just ordered another tonight as a matter of fact before stopping in to read the forums - the new one will become the home one and the old home one will become my travel option. I just love this pillow !
