sleeping well without my cpap.....
I've used cpap for about 11-12 years. I use a swift nasal pillow, but have to tape my mouth shut. Well, about 2 weeks ago, I got the flu. I had horrible coughing fits, so I couldn't use the cpap, since coughing like that with tape over my mouth, and no forewarning........well, I could lose brain matter out my ears. So I thought what the heck..........forget the cpap for awhile. I'm still coughing a lot, but the interesting thing is, I've been sleeping great! I don't wake up several times at night and I'm more comfortable than ever, and I dream a ton. So what's up with that? Does this mean maybe I don't even need the cpap any more? No one sleeps in the room with me, so I can't ask if I snore, etc.
Maybe I'm just so warn out from the flu, that I'm sleeping more deeply. I'm waiting for these horrible coughing jags to stop, then I'll go back to the cpap. But still......makes me wonder...........

Wondering when last you had a sleep study? Also, if you are even slightly contemplating stopping treatment, you are on the wrong forum. Here, we promote using your machine if you've been diagnosed with sleep apnea.Country4ever wrote: ↑Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:31 pmI've used cpap for about 11-12 years. Re: sleeping well without my cpap.....
All it means is that you've been using Cpap long enough so that you were able to get through without it for a short time and maybe that helped your coughing (others use a FFM when they have colds, etc) but it won't last though it may take you a while to realize it. I think you do need a new study, titration, whatever, or else at least some experimentation with your machine at different pressures and using Sleepyhead software to see what's what. You may not have been at a good pressure setting for years so had a hard time using the machine, but commit to a good 'test', whether in lab or at home to learn more, and don't fool yourself about using it.

The brain cannot form memories when you're asleep. The only way that you can remember dreams is to be awakened either during, or immediately after they end... if you stay asleep during/after the dream, then it rapidly fades away, and you don't remember it.Country4ever wrote: ↑Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:31 pmand I dream a ton. So, What that means is that you're sleeping more poorly than you were before.
You're not sleeping more deeply, you're not sleeping better. If you were to wear something to monitor your sleep, you'd find that it was severely fractured.Country4ever wrote: ↑Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:31 pmMaybe I'm just so warn out from the flu, that I'm sleeping more deeply.

@C4e: check your ears.
Do not wait!
Brain matter could be dripping out onto your pillow already.

Re: sleeping well without my cpap.....
I agree with palerider. You're probably sleeping worse and are so worn out from the coughing and all that, you just don't realize it. You may be getting micro-sleeps and the dreaming is during those periods.
I experienced a similar episode with the flu and coughing about two weeks after I started therapy in 2005........and even then it was an excruciatingly long time ( 10 nights ) until I could tolerate keeping the mask on and sleeping with the machine again. That was the last time I slept without my machine. I just can't imagine not sleeping without it now.

What was your original untreated AHI? What is it with treatment? What is your treatment pressure?Country4ever wrote: ↑Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:31 pmI've used cpap for about 11-12 years. Re: sleeping well without my cpap.....
I got a cold two weeks ago also, and it went into acute bronchitis very quickly. I've had chronic bronchitis my whole life, so have to be exceptionally careful to keep it from going acute. However, I had lunch with a couple of former co-workers, and one was sick and didn't warn me beforehand, so I caught it from him.Country4ever wrote: ↑Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:31 pmI've used cpap for about 11-12 years. I had been taping my mouth shut at night before that, but couldn't continue because of coughing. I just wore a Scuncii over my mouth, and a homemade chinstrap (made with a cotton ballcap with the brim cut off and some added velcro, and a Respironics chinstrap) over that to at least try to keep my mouth closed, yet be able to pull them off slightly for bad coughing. Worked perfectly.
It's been working fine for me. I'm all but over it now, but I don't think I'll be taping my mouth shut again for maybe another week to get rid of the last dregs of productive coughing.

I switch to a ff mask when I get sick and crank up the humidifier. That’s the only respite I get from coughing and I sleep way better. I get asthmatic bronchitis and the CPAP helps me so much that when I get really tired from coughing during the day i’ll Put my CPAP on for a rest.
