Shingles Effect?

Post by chillydip » Sat Apr 07, 2018 10:21 am

Had a bout with shingles 3Q last year. Centered in C2 area around right ear and made it impossible to wear any sleep headgear for 2 months. I was able to restart use but have noticed some changes in my numbers. I still have some postherpetic neuralgia (nerve damage) around the ear that remains sensitive to wearing glasses and sleep headgear. My average AHI has gone from 3.7 to 5.0, my peak average pressure has risen from 6.6 to 9.5 and my average device pressure 90% of the time has risen from 6.8 to 7.7. I'm not sure I could reconcile the pressure changes with the shingles but wondering if anyone thinks the nerve damage could be causing the AHI change. Have put on probably 10 pounds but nothing else of significance has changed. Settings are 5-15, ramp 4.

What is the event category break down of that higher AHI compared to lower...what category changed?

Sorry this took a while. Been on since 2008 but have never any deviations of any significance so had to learn some stuff here. I picked a representative week before and after the singles.

pre -shingles - Av 90% press 7.3, Av CPAP 5.9, Av % Per BR 1.4, Av CA index .3, Av OA index .2, Av HP index 2.9, Av RERA index .4, Av FL index .3, Av VS index 1.9 = Av AHI of 3.4
post-shingles - Av 90% press 9.0, Av CPAP 7.2, Av % Per BR 2.3, Av CA index 1.6, Av OA index 1.0, Av HP index 4.5, Av RERA index .4, Av FL index .2, Av VS index 3.8 = Av AHI of 7.1

Have pretty constant sinus drainage issues that I take Flonase for. Don't eat after 6pm. Take 24 hr anti-acid meds daily. After now looking at the past years data, I'm doubting that the shingles is doing much other than the headgear keeps the nerve damaged area very sensitive. Completely discontinued CPAP for 2 months because I couldn't wear the headgear. I'm hitting the minimum pressure multiple times nightly and sometimes (not daily) wake up with air just blasting away kind of out of control.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Did you mean you are hitting the maximum and not the minimum.
Minimum makes no sense but hitting the maximum often does with the way the 90% pressure numbers have gone.
What is your maximum?

Looks like the bulk of your AHI is obstructive in nature both before the shingles and after the episode.
I am wondering if you need a slight upwards pressure adjustment...either in the minimum or the max (if the max is very low and you spend much time there).
As to why...dunno. Maybe the extra 10 lbs but that's a big maybe.
Maybe the shingles did something to the airway tissues or the nerves to those tissues...I dunno but either way no matter why...it needs to be fixed better.

Can you share one of those night's detailed reports where you wake up with the pressures "just blasting away out of control"
I would like to see what it was really doing and I can't see what you can see from here.
See here for how to share.

Not sure what you mean by that but it doesn't matter as my suggestion is unchanged. Use sleepyhead to see your data and share it. See links below.

Protect your tender spots with the softest material you can find.
Braces are lined with soft stuff. Try to get some of that.
