Hi Sean,

I'm sorry to hear of your issues.

I went back and read your old posts and see that in Dec 2017 you mentioned that you were tapering off opiate based medication.

Could the use of this medication be involved in your weight gain, worsened constipation and GERD like symptoms? It isn't clear if you've tapered off it completely yet or if you're still taking a low dose, but if the latter I wonder if this might be a possible factor regarding some of your symptoms?

Lets agree to disagree and move on.
Perhaps you forgot that you said this:

But, the biggest and best thing you can do is exercise, walk, walk, walk, and walk some more until your 25 lbs is gone.
And that's what I've been addressing.

Lately, actual scientific studies are debunking the obsolete claims
that exercise "automatically" leads to weight loss.
Especially aerobic exercise--anaerobic exercise helps build muscle,
which burns more calories. Aerobic does not.

You didn't answer my question. Are you going to bed immediately after eating, or are you having that symptom after meals when you are still active and not in bed?
This happens after eating anything and everything, regardless of the time of day. If I have breakfast in the morning, its about a 50/50 chance i'm gonna see some of that food burped up and spit out into the sink within an hour or two. Usually it doesn't come back up with stomach acid, which I assume is a good thing.

It is a bit worse when I eat then laydown. I don't typically eat right before bed, no.

I did do a barium swallow which showed everything looked normal. Although I was told those barium swallows can't see things a scope can.

Yes it is possible that the taper is related, as I am still on a low dose. I am going to get my thyroid checked as i've read a few posts of people saying they had thyroid issues on and off this med.

Chunkyfrog: A note to say i also have a hiatial hernia & acid reflux, but with a bed that elevates & i raise 30-35 degrees at night. The pulmomologist has already lowered the pressure from 12 to 9. And he said he may need to put me on a bipap machine. I take ranitidine twice a day & still have bloating. I see my gastroenologist next week, he doesn't know I'm on CPAP therapy yet.

So after sleeping more and being more aware of what I feel in the morning, I think its likely I am inhaling air into my esophagus but not able to exhale the amount, therefore I am getting air stuck in my throat and esophagus. I cannot seem to burp it out unless I eat or drink something.

I also notice I can breathe better at night once I've burped up the air. What can I do about this? I am tired of CPAP as it seems to be causing pretty scary side effects for me, but I cant seem to get a full breath without it.

WT? Are you describing an obstructive apnea? Maybe, one that occurs on exhale? This would be very common among those with obstructive sleep apnea. We need to look into your machine model, mask model and machine settings. Please fill out your equipment profile, https://www.cpaptalk.com/ucp.php?i=prof ... pment_info , and post in this thread what your machine settings are including pressure, ramp and exhalation relief. Are you using Sleepyhead software ( viewtopic/t88983/Pugsys-PointersSleepyH ... Hints.html ) ?

I updated to the best i could. I have been switching between an auto machine and a regular CPAP for about a week. I didn't see any ResMed options. I'm using a Resmed AutoSet and Resmed Escape. So far the auto hasn't helped much. Still retaining air and now my throat is swelling up in the day. Not good. Need to see a doc ASAP. I have another sleep study in a month, but in the meantime, I need to know which doc to see first. ENT, Gastro, etc.

What this tells me is that CPAP is NOT causing your issues, although your issues are probably complicating your CPAP therapy. You are correct that you need to be seen ASAP. I would suggest starting with a gastroenterologist because if no mechanical obstruction was seen on the barium swallow there is something GI related other than a stricture causing your problems.

Truly, nobody here has any business trying to give you an armchair diagnosis. This is way beyond what we can help you with until you get appropriate medical attention. All the suggestions about how to tweak your CPAP are really not useful until this issue is diagnosed and resolved. Get to a doctor ASAP.

None of these problems popped up until I started CPAP. Every single morning I wake up and I can feel air trapped in my esophagus and it won't come out one way or the other until I eat. I, myself, think CPAP is very likely the catalyst for this and I wish I could fall asleep without it, but I cannot any longer, so I'm stuck with it until I find out the root cause.

What are your machine settings? Which type mask are you using?

As far as whether to see an ENT or a Gastro first, make appointments with both. If the first one you go to finds the problem, you can cancel the appointment with the second one.

Your pressure setting is either 8.0 or something else. "About" doesn't compute.

You say you are using a straight CPAP and an AutoSet. Is it a safe assumption that they have different settings?

Trying to help someone who gives incomplete and inaccurate information about their own therapy is not fun.

Its 8. I've used it at 8.2 before... but its 8.
