With the current set up the accounts have to created manually. This was not the case last year and the bots had a field day.

There is a simple solution that will work temporarily until new measures are put in place. Every new thread has to be completed with a Captcha Code before submission. All it requires in it's basic form is one extra click of a mouse on a radio button that says "I am not a robot". It can be taken a step further where the code has to be entered manually. When you think about it, it's not that much extra to do after you've gone to the effort of creating a new thread.
Not really going to work all the time. Here is a Google search for captcha solving services. :(

Oohh nasty. However, it may work temporarily.

I have a idea :!: , that would solve the problem, and be fair.

1. Allow site read only free.
2. New Members Sign Up fee, $5 or $10, This would allow posting, but would be revocable for the good of the site... I know this will be hard to deal with for some. Also a pain for the owner.
3. I think to cover the fee, CPAP dot Com could credit the fee on items on their web site. If revoked due to abuse, also a time limit of 3 or 6 months on the credit.

Do away with CAPCHA, they don't work and are a pain in the _ss!

I realize this will be added work for the site owner, but hopefully the traffic to the business site would cover the added effort. There may be reasons why this idea can't be done, but clearly we don't have a answer to this problem. :!: Jim

I like it, GoofProof, and require the fee to be in dollars. That would cause additional pain via exchange fees. Granted, those of us who also use Paypal and other fintech services may blanch, but it goes away with time. 8)

EDIT: Just noticed that if someone (oops) responds to the sticky, it loses its stickiness. Anyone know a way to solve that?

It still sticks, it shows up as the orgional post, just click on the title, not the box before the title. Clicking on the box takes you to the next unread post. Jim

Thanks but no, you can't do much.
There isn't even any need to report it as spam. I will see it and put a stop to it.
I block the account first as soon as I see the spam and then I set about removing them.
He tried a little bit earlier tonight but only got 2 posts in. I had to go feed the dogs so I missed these initially but I won't be away from the computer for very long so they won't last long.

There will likely be a mess here tomorrow morning once he realizes the shop keepers have gone to bed.
Won't take us long to clean it up though so just bear with us.

I have no doubt that he will be back later if not sooner to test things again.
He didn't do much last night...only had 2 accounts and about 60 spam posts. Must have been away from his computer for a while.

I don't get what the point is,.....what is he/she/it trying to accomplish? Surely there is a point in spending all this time trying to post meaningless messages on the board.

I have only seen two of them to date.

Beats the hell out of me. He does it on other forums too. Not just us and he's hated just as much there as here.
Same crap content on those forums too. Also spotted where he harvested some people's email addresses and they wake up to 1,000 emails from this asshole.

5 new accounts since 7 PM that are his. All 5 now blocked and the spam removed.
It's just starting tonight.

Yeah...battle of hard headed wills here.
He's now trying to hide his online status in an effort to sneak past me.
I guess he doesn't realize I work off a member list that he can't hide in.
He's going into the user control panel and changing the default from "show me" to "hide me".
He did it several times with the recent attack in the wee hours of this morning. This is new behavior to him.
He registers, changes online status to "hide" and then turns the bots loose. Doesn't matter because I can still see whose online or even new member but not online at the moment just from the member list which is where I go to ban someone.
More work for him but same amount of work for me....so I don't care. He's getting nuked either way.
