newby with runny nose

Post by witsend » Fri Feb 25, 2005 2:05 pm

Been thru every single page here and haven't found complaints of runny nose? Is this not normal? Hubby just started cpac and wakes up with stuffy tehn runny nose all day sneezing and blowing. Whats up?

There was another post on this earlier today or yesterday.

The suggestions were (from memory)

1) He might be alergic to the mask or, if it's new, to some of the residue from it's manufacture. Try cleaning it carefully.

2) If he is allergic to dust or other allergens, make sure the filter is clean and in place.

3) If he had a cold recently, make sure the mask has been properly cleaned since that time, lest he be re-infecting himself.

4) If he has heated humidification, play with the level, make sure he's not getting rainout just before the mask and snorting excess water into his sinuses.

Beyond that, I don't recall if there were any other suggestions.

And if not, just tell people he just got some bad news and can't resist weeping over it.

Liam, sniffleupagus.

I think I was the earlier post. In my case, just got back from the doctor and she said she's had a run on people who get a cold and then the symptoms keep coming back so I got antibiotics. HOWEVER ... I am still going to thoroughly wash my equipment because I really didn't do it last night (first time user) just to eliminate any potentional problem because since I do not FEEL sick this time, I still wonder if there is a connection between all this sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes and my new set-up !!

If hubby hasn't been sick, do try all the things Liam said ! Or try them anyway!

I've had the same problem for a long time. Mine is caused by my sinus being too dry. I use a heated humidifier, but my mouth keeps opening and the air just runs through my nose and out my mouth. It dries me out really badly. I haven't been able to find a ful-face mask that works without leaking so badly it's like a pager on vibrate sitting on my face and going off about every 20 minutes.

Can you tolerate a chin strap, it's what I was told I needed. They are NOT the most comfortable thing in town, but they do help. I have the silverlining software for my 420E, so I'm able to follow my own progress (or lack of) and my leaks are minimal.

I had the universal chin strap --G A R B A G E...I bought the c/s from cpap.com, it has a soft material chin shaped sort-of holder and it's a bit better.

Hope this helps. Buy it from cpap.com, good prices, good follow up and follow thru, and no I am not a sales rep, or anything else just someone who's tried a few thins to get comfy. I'm only going on 4 wks.

Witsend,
Well, I've not had the runny nose after using the treatment, but having a runny nose and watery eyes BEFORE using the machine sure is the pits. And whatever you do, never go to bed crying.....all the sniffles and resulting clogged up nose will make it impossible to use a nose mask. Trust me. What a pain. ......I did have the runny nose in the morning, before I got the humidifier, though.

Easier said than done, if you suffer from frustration and depression, either spawned by the apnea or separately.

Liam, who knows.

Right the crying, begging or whatever should only occur before getting into bed...
