Major eye swelling

Post by lilyaqha » Thu Feb 22, 2018 8:59 pm

I've got an appt tomorrow. I've had pappy for 7 years. A few months ago I kept getting a bloody nose. Then it stopped, now I have nose swelling, upper eyelid swelling, huge bags and lines under my eyes and a severe case of eczema all over my body. My humidifier hasn't really worked consistently for a couple of years now. My mask is kind of loose. (No insurance to replace, now I have really good insurance). Oh, and the machine turns off then turns back on on it's own every once in a while. Should I replace the machine? Should I use it tonight?

you need to put the make and model of your cpap in your profile. if its not in the list of choices add it in additional comments.
is your machine a pr system one model 550 or 560? both of our 550's were turning themselves off. it gets worse, not better. It's probably time to start thinking of a new machine and mask.

Those do not sound like CPAP related symptoms. I would use the PAP then see what the Dr. says tomorrow.

Sounds like you have a major autoimmune problem, and should definitely talk to your doctor. I can't see how Cpap would be responsible at all, but maybe think abuot what else in your life is different now, anything from food to soap/creams, to meds to whatever you can think of.

system one is a name, but not the model. the model can be found on the sticker on the bottom of the machine. the system one model 550 is the one that was shutting off.
if your mask is loose and leaking it could be feeding air to your eyes all night, causing part of the problem. if it is leaking bad it is probably doing you more harm than good.

It sounds part of the problem is an old mask that doesn’t fit well. It is allowing air up into your eyes and they are swelling.
If your humidifier doesn’t work, possibly that is causing irritation in your nose and dryness.
I have had a CPAP for so long, that my first machine did not have a humidifier. When they finally developed one, it was not heated. There really was only one mask and it was just a matter of what size.
I had swollen eyes and a dried up nose for years.

As for the eczema, no idea there, but I wouldn’t think they are related to the cpap.

So my machine is a 450. Did not use the machine last night and there's a HUGE difference in my nose/eye swelling. Just my appointment, and the Dr said it isn't the machine infact, the machine works fine they said! Uh, it's turned off and in by itself and I see it every night. The water in the humidifier doesn't humidify, I've tested it. It sat there for weeks at the same level where when I first got it the water went down every night. I'm not using this thing anymore. Oh and the eczema, whenever I have a problem like an infection or irritation I break out. My nose bleeds? Apparently not caused by the machine. What a joke.

Autoimmune disorders can crop up at any time.
Talk to your doctor.
By all means, update your equipment.
Untreated apnea can only mess with your system.

The 50 series machines had a known and common problem with the humidifier not working.
The problem is in the blower and where the humidifier connections are and replacing the humidifier won't fix the problem.

To test your machine...turn it on and set the humidity level to max of 5....let it run for 20 minutes (Auto off needs to be off for it do run without your being attached).
After 30 minutes pull out the water chamber and feel the bottom of it...it should be warm to the touch. If it isn't warm then it's not working.

If it isn't working...how handy are you at fixing things? There's a thread here that shows how to fix the known issue (assuming that is the problem).

You can send it off for repairs but to be honest it's going to cost probably more to fix it than it is worth.
I would put the repair money towards a new and better machine if it were me.

I've tried that before, it works but turns off sometime during the night and stays off. This Dr said I'll put in a fix or new request to your insurance, meanwhile keep using it. Nope, used consistently for 10 years, have had a major issue for 2 weeks now then I stop for one night and issue mostly goes away/I feel better? I'm not letting this thing destroy my face anymore. :? I feel like he blew off my opinion about what's going on.

I opened up my wife's machine to proactively exercise connectors and apply dielectric grease to each and find the charring shown in this presentation. Her humidifier had continued to work but I wanted to check out the situation.
I found that the only force pressing the connector contact to the tang from the pcb is the tight fit of the plastic housing (the contact only presses on one side of the tang). With the plastic melted like that, the contact force relaxes, accelerating the self-destruction.

I opted to clean the tang with a file but leave the connector intact. By bending the tangs down towards the board I've got positive contact pressure now as the tangs clamp the connector against the board.
I applied dielectric grease to the connection and the humidifier continues to work a couple of months later.
I may have to solder things eventually but decided to give this a try for now.
This single post from the viewtopic/t102275/Fix-Respironics-Syste ... a9#p957492 thread might be easier to try if you or someone does not have soldering experience. Probably skip the dielectic grease for a test fix.

If your machine is 10 years old you were due a new one 5 years ago.
