Very chapped upper lip

Post by KTinTexas » Thu Feb 22, 2018 2:19 pm

I've been switching back and forth between the Brevida mask and the Swift FX nasal pillow mask that I got from the DME. I've started getting a very chapped upper lip when I use the Swift FX mask. I try to use the Brevida mask so I won't get the chapped lip but it just doesn't seal well enough (the soft pillows that make it nice tend to collapse). So I'm sending the Brevida mask back and may get a different one (I've tried several) but is there anything I can do about the chapping while I'm waiting? I think the Swift FX has a better seal so I don't know why I'm getting the chapping. It's pretty bad - not just around my lips but on the skin between my mouth and nose. Looks like it might start bleeding. I've been putting Aquaphor on it which does help.

I don't think it's supposed to come in contact with your upper lip. Maybe the fit isn't right? I sometimes use a thin layer of lanolin to protect my nose from my pillow mask.

First of all, you should rinse new pillows (or any silicone mask cushion/pillow) before using as they may contain residues from manufacturing and/or packaging process.

For irritated skin, use some Ayr's saline gel with aloe. It can take a few days to a week for skin to adjust to masks.

Thanks. I'll try the Ayr's saline gel with aloe.

Oh! My nostrils have been irritated from a new pillow headgear. I guess I should've thought of washing it first. It didn't occur to me.

For sore nostrils try a bit of lanolin normally in the nursing mother section used for sore nipples when breast feeding

Remember, that as we age, our skin can become more sensitive.
We can even suddenly develop new allergies.
This getting old is not for sissies!
