When buying a hose becomes a quest

Post by loggerhead12 » Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:37 am

I'm traveling this week, with my Aircurve in tow. Two nights ago my wife nudged me and said, "you're leaking." After quickly checking the bedsheets were still dry, I heard the distinct hissing sound that woke her up. The Climate Line hose had developed a hole after only three years of use.

Long story made short - I called six local medical equipment supply houses. Three of them had the hose in stock. None of them could sell me a hose for any amount of money. They wanted me to set up patient accounts, provide insurance information and a prescription, and set up regular recurring deliveries. Offers of my HSA card or even stacks of cash just confused them. They were mortified that I might show up in person at their local businesses and pick one up. Even Amazon couldn't deliver one for at least a week. There is no way to get important medical equipment replaced the same day.

I finally plugged the broken one with some super glue and packing tape. That has now become part of my permanent traveling CPAP kit.

Lugging a second CPAP seems excessive until the one you have breaks.

Well...sometimes there are places not so strict...if you are lucky.
Some years back I traveled to Las Vegas to see my daughter and grandson.
Arrived on a Friday before the 4th of July on Sat or Sun (I forget exactly)....didn't bother setting up the cpap machine until around 10:30 PM....
Some dumbass, who will remain nameless, forgot to confirm the contents of the travel cpap machine bag prior to the trip.
The dumbass also forgot she had removed the long hose from the bag for some reason or other.

So the dumbass and her daughter spent about 2 hours searching for some place in Las Vegas that was open on a holiday weekend that would sell them any sort of cpap long hose.
Too late to even go to Home Depot and construct something.
Anyhow...found a place that sold general medical equipment OTC and they had a generic cpap hose available without all the hooplah.
$30 bucks for a generic cheap non heated hose that I can find any day of the week at Amazon or EBay for $6 bucks and that's a delivered price.

Today we also have some truck stops carrying cpap stuff like a long hose but back then not so lucky and even if a truck stop carried it Murphy's Law would mean the truck stop was 200 miles away.

At least you had a hose to try to repair.

Your repair will likely hold long enough to get you home.
FWIW...I recently had to replace a heated hose that had the nerve to get a hole somewhere in it after probably 25 K hours of use. Damn cat.

That's awesome. I didn't even think of truck stops. File that for future reference . . .

Our benevolent board sponsor is shipping one to my house for Friday delivery.

Yes...but even Amazon doesn't/can't always deliver next day anymore. It all depends on where you happen to be

Did you see this part?

Straight up tape didn't work well. The spiral wire makes channels where the air can escape. You have to plug the hole with glue, then support there plug with tape. I'm sure duct tape would have worked as well as packing tape, though.

Many options I didn't know about. And all better than Craigslist.

Why cpap users, especially long time forum members , don't have a:
  • Spare hose,
  • Spare mask,
  • Spare cushion,
  • Spare humidifier,
  • Spare filter
I'll never understand.

Heck, I'll even throw a spare machine onto the list, but understand that there are financial implications not available to some. Preferably of the same type, so one has a spare power supply for troubleshooting.

Oh...I have spares of everything but I don't take those spares with me when I travel. I am doing good to have all the basic needs covered. Apparently Loggerhead12 thinks like I do.

My spare stuff takes up more room in my carry-on than the stuff I plan on using.
