Dreamware nasal pillows 50% leaking and feel terrible bloating in a.m

Post by Slats » Fri Feb 16, 2018 2:25 pm

I have switched from Airfit p10 nasal pillows because my area between my nostrils and in one nostril was getting very raw and also I was tires of the imprint of the strap on my face (I am a side sleeper and seem to stay on one side all night), I use a soft cover for the strap , but I still have a visible strap indentation.

The Dreamware gelnasal pillows do not leave a mark, However, i t is leaking like crazy ( last night 50 , when threshold is 24). I use the mask fit option on my air sense
machine, while in bed, but it is still showing huge leaks and the red face in the a.m.

The worst aspect is that this past week, I have woken up very very bloated and it is painful and takes about an hour to relieve the gas/air. A lousy way to start the day. Help.

leaking like crazy
Some tips ------------->
To reduce unintentional mask leak -

- Make sure the mask is fitted properly. (See mask manufacturer's video.)

- Make sure the headgear is adjusted properly (See mask manufacturer's video.)

- If you use a low ramp pressure or a low minimum pressure, you should fit and adjust your mask at the higher pressures it is operating at for most of the night. You would temporarily change the machine pressure settings while you do the fitting and adjusting. It's best to do this well before bedtime before you are tired and ready for sleep. Don't forget to change your settings back to the ones you prefer.

- Make sure to use good hose management - the hose should not pull on the mask. Notice how your hose is positioned between machine and mask. It should be positioned to minimize any pull on the mask. Hose management is an individual practice. How it is done depends on the mask, the position of the machine, your sleeping position and other factors specific to the individual.

- If you still have problems, learn from the forum what mask liners are available.

- Start a thread in cpaptalk asking for help. Subject: Need Help with Mask xxxxxx

- If your mask still has excessive leak, try other masks. Many people report trying several masks before they find one that works well for them.

What size gel pillow are you using?
Any chance you can try the size smaller? I had leak issues with the DreamWear gel pillows...just more leaks than I liked to see and I think that it was because the size I was using (small) was still a bit too big for my nose and I wanted to try a smaller size to see if it was more stable but they don't make it in a size smaller than Small. It just moved around a little too much to suit me. ....and I know for sure it was mask movement because I taped my mouth one night just to make sure that the leaks I was seeing was mask movement and not mouth opening/breathing leaks.

I think it must be the heated hose that is the issue, because I took a nap with my old Airfit p10 for an hour and had 50% leakage. The hose is heavy and I am uncertain what else to do re positioning the hose. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Rig up some sort of hose hanger or hose management system to keep the hose up so it can't pull on the mask.
You can buy them but you can also make one with just a bit of DIYing.
See this thread for some links to homemade
viewtopic.php?t=10640

and store bought...this is one of many, many that are available.

I don't like hose hanger systems. We already have enough equipment to keep up with, and a hanger system adds one more concern when traveling.

Before going to a hose hanger system, I suggest observing how the hose is positioned between the machine and your mask. Observe how the hose runs in each position in which you sleep. Think about how you could position the machine and hose so that there is no pull on the mask. You may need to reposition the machine. You may need to sleep closer to the edge of the mattress. (Don't fall out! )

I don't know whether this will help but I put on my mask, breathe to fire up the machine and then gently pull the pillows away from my nostrils then let them resettle. It seems to work by creating a good seal. The other ideas about adjusting the headgear are also good but the biggest mistake is making the adjustment too tight. Once you get it right you'll know.
