Any other "ramp haters?"

Post by D.H. » Thu Feb 15, 2018 7:52 pm

Very early during my CPAP use, I found that the ramp was of no use to me, and I began to actively dislike it. Before I figured out how to disable it (which was a little bit tricky on my original - now ancient - machine), I used to turn it on before bedtime and leave it on during potty breaks, just to avoid the lower ramp pressure.

When it was time for CPAP #2 (also ancient by today's standards), I asked for no ramp. They told me I could set it to zero, so I was happy with that.

Are there any long term CPAP users who like the ramp?

I used ramp for the first few weeks when I began CPAP, but got used to starting off with set pressure so I haven't used it since. I upgraded nearly two years ago to APAP, never used ramp on it.

Ramp is a relatively new development, compared to cpap itself.
Its intent is to help sensitive beginners get started with therapy.
Any little thing to welcome newbies into the fold . . .

This was 1999, and I had a ramp then. I also had the only CPAP on the market at that time that had a built-in or integrated humidifier. All other CPAPs at that time had to be used with a stand-alone humidifier or none at all.

Nothing like starting NewBee's out with less air that's required to breath, and pressure so low they don't get the treatment they need, while we are at it, lets tell them to press the button and start it all over again. We wonder why the closet gets 50% of users right out of the box.

Maybe we could start them out with a nasal mask so if there is any needed air left to hold their airway open, it will rush out thru their mouth. Success at any cost! Jim

I think ramp was designed to help people get acclimated to the CPAP. Once they are used to having the mask and pressure the majority of people discontinue the ramp...especially if the have relatively low pressures. If I remember correctly I used it for about a week...my fixed pressure at the time was 10. If the ramp is used for any length of time, there is the possibility of having events that would probably not ocure if the pressure would rise more quickly.

For me ramp is a comfort. I like to make myself as comfortable as possible for sleep. I use a 5 minute ramp set a couple of pressure points below my minimum pressure.

My range is 9 - 14 and I start off at 7. 5 minutes later I am at a minimum of 9.

Many like to simply jump right in but I find a little "foreplay" very comforting...

I hit my ramp button sometimes if the ipap gets into the twenties and wakes me up. Easier to call back to sleep that way.

I am not a ramp hater, especially after today. Had to switch to a nasal mask for a few weeks after using a full face mask because of some surgery. ( The ffm straps were pulling on my stitches. )

Anyway, having a pressure of 18 go directly up my nose with the pillows was startling and uncomfortable. The ramp feature allowed my body to adjust more comfortably.

Ramp is awesome. It lets you get situated and deal with leaks before the pressure climbs. Once it gets past 20 you better be squared away because there's no fixing leaks in that territory.

This was not the intention of the ramp, but if it works for you, fine.

Then what is the intention of the ramp if not to lower the pressure so a person can easier breathe with it?

Why is it that the "ramp haters" look at "ramp lovers" like they are the ugly step child or second class citizens that just need to grow up or grow a set of balls?

@D.H.:
Ramp is like anything else that can help,
like sleep meds, crutches, glasses, and hearing aids.
If you don't need it--DON'T USE IT.
But for those who need it, you are WRONG in trying to shame them.

It was meant to start the night, not as a "reset" button. However, it certainly can be used that way!
