Sleeping 10-12 Hours a Day Even with CPAP [SH Included]

Post by archerhahn » Thu Feb 08, 2018 6:31 pm

Hello,

I have been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea (~90AHI, 80~90% blood oxygen levels) in August, and have been using CPAP religiously ever since October. The problem is that I sleep 10-12 hours a day, which makes it impossible for me to deal with my life’s demands as a college student.

My sleep pattern goes like this: I set an alarm for 7-8 hours. I sleep 7-8 hours a night with my CPAP machine, I painfully wake up to the alarm, then I subconsciously turn off the alarm and go right back to sleep without the CPAP machine for the next 3-5 hours, adding up to 12 hours. During my CPAP sleep session, I don’t recall waking up at all until the alarm; I consider myself a heavy sleeper. During the day, I have low energy levels and I feel like I can sleep at any moment, especially during meditation.

Just to give you more information on myself, I am a 22-year old male college student residing in California. I do not do drugs and I rarely drink alcohol (once in 2-3 months). I do not take any form of meds. I try to have the most optimal sleep hygiene as possible, so that is most likely not the problem. I am healthy other than this problem. However, I sometimes find myself mouth-breathing/not breathing and holding my breath during the day. I also find that I’m drooling during my sleep when I sleep on my side.

I am currently using AirSense 10 AutoSet, with a nasal pillow. My pressure is currently set from 6-12. EPR is on full time at the level of 3. Humidifier is on at level 4.

Here is my SleepyHead data, there's a total of 3 images:

I know that it says I slept at 3am, but it's just wrong time settings! I'll make sure to fix it from now on.

I would appreciate it if you could provide any information on what my problem could be.
FYI: I had an old thread but it went off topic and information was scattered so I decided to make a new thread, sorry.

if there was a $1,000 bill on the dresser every time you got up with the alarm you would be up before the alarm. You need to train yourself to get up. louder alarm that doesn't quit until you get up and walk across the room. self responsibility. fix it now or you'll tend to get fired when you go to work late.

If I get up on the alarm, I literally am too tired to go through my day and I can't concentrate. It's seriously not a motivational issue, I used to wake up 5AM everyday to go rowing. If anyone has other ideas, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Is there different info from other topic you started? I see your getting more comments over there. I also noticed your amount of sleep has changed?

Hi! Thanks for your reply. Last thread I didn't know what people were looking for so I answered all these questions one by one, I decided to compile all the questions people asked and make my thread more clear. My sleep ranges from 9~12 but the past two days it's been leaning toward 11~12 so I changed the numbers a bit. The point is, I'm getting way more excessive sleep than is normal.

The other thread.
viewtopic/t158387/Sleeping-for-911-Hour ... -Help.html
same question but it got confusing and sideways and off track a bit..
So we elected to start a new one with more history consolidated and hopefully this one will stay fairly on track (or as on track as most of the other threads here end up being. )

Have you had a medical evaluation including blood tests like thyroid, CBC, liver, kidney, etc?

I was your age I slept about 9 hours a night, sometimes more. Not uncommon for people to need that much sleep. However if your sleeping 7-8 hours and then sleeping another 3-5 hours right after that on a regular basis then something is not right.

Like said you definitely want to talk to a doctor and have some blood tests to rule out possible causes.

Before I came to this forum I had the same problem as you. I was exhausted with 8 hours of sleep. Felt pretty good if I could get 11-12 hours. Xpap therapy wasn't helping. Turns out all I needed was change of pressure on my machine which lower the number of events I was having. Now I feel pretty good with just 8 hours.
