AHI very high and BiPAP doesnt help

Post by highapnea » Fri Feb 02, 2018 1:05 pm

Hi

My AHI was 80 while diagnosed for sleep apnea in 2015. Doctor advised BiPAP and brought down the AHI to 7-10 with 7 hrs use .. But I still struggle during the day with watery , burning eyes. Any suggestions ? Does this reduced AHi shown are really real ?

What mask do you use? It's probably allowing air to get into your eyes and there are ways to fix that, but we need more info to help. Do try artificial tears (drugstore) for now though.

Your treatment isn't as good as it should be, AHI should be lower under 5, but really under two. Get the software and get-er-done! Jim

Buy one of these: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Bella-Sl ... /540361703

Wear it over your eyes when you put on your cpap mask. IF the mask (FFM? likely) is leaking air into your eyeballs due to a bad seal, this will stop it from drying out your eyeballs and you'll know for sure.

It's real cheap so can't hurt either way, and comes in handy.

Also as others have said, post your info and data to see if things can be tweaked even better on your cpap therapy

I use a full mask covering nose and mouth. I most of the time breath through my mouth.
I also don't think my mask is leaking .. its air tight always or most of the time .. and I notice it in my app too. I agree to another comment where if my AHI Is less than 4 , it might help me better ..

I will meet the doctor and request for more pressure on my BiPAP .. At present it is 18/20 if I am correct.

Any suggestions for drooling issue ? Whenever I sleep sideways, I drool and wet my face inside the mask. This wakes me up every time to remove mask and clean face and get back to sleep.. This definitely disturbs the sleep a lot more than the apnea itself ...

The OP states that his(her) AHI is down from 80 to ten or less. While still too high, it's a big improvement!

It would help if (s)he fills out his(her) profile so we know which machine and mask is being used and also the settings.

You might want to figure out what kind of apnea events you are having before going down the "let's increase the pressure" road.
More pressure isn't always the solution depending on what that AHI is composed of.
Use available software and see for sure what is happening and when.
https://sleep.tnet.com/equipment

If you are waking often fiddling with the mask you increase the odds of some awake breathing events getting flagged and if you are awake they don't count.
Consider a mask liner to help with the drool issue. It will absorb the slobber.

Regarding the dry eyes, it may be exhaust air reflected off your blanket if mask leaking isn't the issue. For me it was very subtle air escaping near the bridge of my nose. Either way, the eye drops will help. Give it a try.

It's *BETTER* to use mask liners if there are leaks, instead of leaving the excessive leaks and trying to work around them.

Agreed. Ultimately, goals should be individualized. Even with optimized settings and gear, under 2 is not a realistic goal for all of us.

Did you drool before? If not, it may just go away as you settle in.

Fixing mask leaks could help the watery eyes, eye guards can help too.

I would get some sleepyhead charts up and see if anyone has some suggestions on your settings.
